What decades of research reveal about involuntary substance use treatment – and why evidence points elsewhere
Many cities are considering involuntary substance use treatment as a solution to drug use among the homeless. But research doesn’t support this strategy.

All it would take is removing the center turn lane in most areas. Parking was already removed or reduced to make space for that center turn lane.

And, to be clear, parking was still removed. Instead of bike lanes we now have a middle of the road turning lane. The space is there for bike lanes if the center turn lane is removed. Parking is already reduced or gone.

That said, if this did not go through focus groups, I would blame the budget associated with the ad. I am sure it wasn’t nearly big enough to develop a better ad. Prevention is severely underfunded (as the bike blog community knows all too well.)

I haven’t been a college student for 40 (yikes!) years, so I have no idea what phrases or wording resonates with young adults. Campaigns like these usually go through focus groups before launching. So this is probably what made it through focus groups. It doesn’t need to make sense to me.
100
Inga Manskopf @imanskopf.bsky.social · 12/12/2024
And the fact that we’re discussing this on social media is a, probably unintended, win for the campaign. We all got the message that 90% of college students don’t drink and drive, regardless of the wording and placement of the ad.
220
Inga Manskopf @imanskopf.bsky.social · 12/12/2024
As far as the actual wording, my guess is it’s what resonated during focus groups with college students. The main message is that taking light rail after drinking is, by far, the norm. These kinds of messages work much better than scare messages.
120
Inga Manskopf @imanskopf.bsky.social · 12/12/2024
This is a social norms campaign focusing on college students. These campaigns are meant to reinforce positive behaviors and tell the audience that the behavior is the norm. Instead of “don’t drink and drive” this tells students they are doing the right thing and most of their peers agree.
