Finished reading The Cracks We Bear by Catalina Infante in Michelle Mirabella's translation. Compact and powerful, this novel is about mothers and daughters and much more. Michelle's beautiful, sure-handed translation has been shortlisted for ALTA's 2026 Spain-USA Foundation Translation Award.

Just finished My Dreadful Body by EganaEgana Djabbarova, translated from Russian (with some Azerbaijani preserved) by Lisa C. Hayden and published by @newvesselpress.bsky.social. This is an extraordinary book--piercing, poetic, necessary. I highly recommend it! #literatureintranslation #womenwriters

Just finished reading @ericscottryon.bsky.social's debut novel I'M THE UNDERTOW, set in California's central coast. It made me think a lot, it made me feel a lot! #literaryfiction #debutnovel #californiacentralcoast #bookrecommendation
Cover of the novel I'm the Undertow by Eric Scot Tryon, with a black baground and winding, intersecting lines that look like road lanes. One of the lines frays into what looks like skid marks.

It's been eighteen months since The Book of Affects came into the world! Many thanks to Marilia Arnaud for entrusting me with her magnificent work, to Sundial House for publishing the book, and to everyone who has read it and spread the word. You can purchase it at cup.columbia.edu/book/the-boo...
"It is true that I clung to this man with all the desperation and hope of a castaway. No, I didn't save myself, if that's what you're wondering. The bottom of my boat is splintered, and every now and then it lists under the force of unstable currents, but the storm has lifted, and here with you, I am groping, trying to put some order to all these turbulent emotions, searching for a reconciliation with our fragile universe." Quote from the story "Flesh and Agony," in The Book of Affects by Marilia Arnaud, translated by Ilze Duarte

My latest translation, "Dromedaries on the Sidewalk" by Brazilian author Claudia Nina, is the opening story in the current issue of Puerto del Sol. You can subscribe to the magazine or purchase individual issues. More information on www.puertodelsol.org. #literatureintranslation #shortstory
"I miss the breeze that used to blow from the sea, the mild wind on my body during my daily walks. There has been no wind for a long while. Maybe something strange is happening in the city, but I can't figure out what it is because besides the absence of the neighbors, the trampled indigent on the ground, and the sea of dead fish on the beach--also deserted--everything is perfectly fine." "Dromedaries on the Sidewalk," a short story by Brazilian writer Claudia Nina, translated by Ilze Duarte.

Here's an article I wrote a few years ago for @hopscotch-tr.bsky.social on AI and literary translation. This discussion will only become more relevant in the coming years. I invite you to read all the articles in the forum: hopscotchtranslation.com/2023/09/19/s... #writingisforhumans #translation
As the #namethetranslator movement has been successful in highlighting the importance of acknowledging translators for the essential work they do, so can a widespread movement succeed in raising awareness of teh type of work involved in literary translation and the reasons why only we--humans, writers, artists--can do it. My article on AI and translation in Hopscotch Translation.

The short story collection The Book Affects by @mariliaarnaud in my translation available at my local library! To accept a recommendation of a book, libraries usually require at least one professional review in a reputable publication. Thought this would be helpful info to #emergingtranslators.
