Looks like I’m a historian. Senior Lecturer at UWestminster: wrote a book about the memory of colonialism in Britain and France, and another one about the pitfalls of memory politics in post-WWII Europe. Dogs are better.

I usually just quote the French comic book author Blanche Sabbah who just said she was “azionist”, because she was just tired of the meaninglessness of the word thrown around to express so many assumed things.

But also I think Warsaw is just not a BlueSky compliant kind of place.

Haha. I mean, we could discuss the accuracy of “99% intact” due to bombings in 1939, different demolitions throughout the war and some Red Army destruction. But yeah, you can still take tourists to look at inner courtyards in Praga for a bit on nostalgia.

So to be entirely fair, the area that’s entirely flattened is the ghetto after the 1943 ghetto uprising. The one that’s “merely” burnt down with skeletal ruins peeping out of the ground is the rest of the city after the Warsaw Uprising. Obviously, none of these details change your initial point 😉

Ja.

Itay Lotem @ilotem.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

Ja. Diese ganze Debatte erinnert mich schon stark an das gescheiterte British Empire and Commonwealth Museum in Bristol.

Again, not saying it will not have that kind of impact. But I guess I’m a bit less convinced about how different actors here interpret the vibes and how they react to whatever the trend is (especially on the I/P issue).

Itay Lotem @ilotem.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Hmmm. In terms of vibe and trend, sure. I’m still not convinced it would have that kind of influence on Trump (who spends political capital in ways that probably have little to do with reality and rarely take aim at anything beyond the next two hours) and again, not sure about supposed EU effect.

Why do you think the midterms will have such an outsized impact, seeing how even Dem control of both Congress and Senate wouldn’t change THAT much in terms of the day to day in the next couple of years? Just in case I missed something big?

Oh yeah, shock therapy was about external pressure (also same in Spain and Portugal at the end of the dictatorship). Thing is that everyone is having this debate because of Owen Jones’ “THE WEST CREATED PUTIN”, which took the well know shock therapy history with conspiratorial social media vibe.

Itay Lotem @ilotem.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Ugh. I think this is probably the worst place for a debate like this, where everyone just writes one liners. Like, you can see how the “shock therapy” of the 1990s devastated quite a lot everywhere, but also realise it kinda depended on local actors and factors rather than just intl “conspiracy”?

This is a poor take that suggests Owen Jones doesn't know much about Russia in the 1990s, including Russia-US or wider Russia-West relations in the 1990s. By giving only one part of the story, he is repeating the Russian political elite's self-serving line that it was all the West's fault. Long 🧵

I am not talking about the Greens being somehow “beyond the pale” or “scary” (too much SchwarzGrün for that), and I might be reading too much into vibes, but I think there might be a space for a centrist party for a big portion of CDU votes.

If you mean the kind of urban socially liberal middle classes that were key in Macron I then yes. What I’m not entirely sure of is whether the Greens have the vibes for getting the actual conservatives of late Macron I and Macron II to switch.

Possible. But another option is a new “centrist” formation à la Macron with a few CDU refugees (thinking of Wüstian faction) and a few other characters who try to get “between” the AfD and the Left and essentially just recreate the pre-Lindner FDP?
