Why does a wound feel like winter? 🧵 Cut a leaf and the wound turns cold, and it turns out the plant is reading that chill as an instruction. botany.fyi/winterwound
A thermal image of a leaf. Two cuts on the plant show up as striking cold purple against the warm orange of the leaf.

It's seed season! It's a bit too wet to harvest seeds, but I couldn't help myself. From left to right: Vicia cracca, Dill, Agrostemma githago, Lathyrus odoratus, Green beans. #gardening #seeds #autumn
A wooden table with 5 green packets on it in a row. On each packet there is a pile of seeds in brown or black. Above the packets some empty pods are visible.

Tiny snail and friends cleaning up the dead stalks of a Parsley plant. #nature #invert #snail #autumn
Many beige coloured dead stalks, some with wet clustered seeds at the end. There is a similar coloured tiny snail on one of the stalks. It's shell is warm brown and its eye stalks are dark grey.

Just look at this beauty. A Hornet ( Vespa crabro). I have never noticed how much red/orange it has on its back, but then I have never been as close to one before in such good light!

It's so warm for October that some seeds are sprouting. Wrong season, sweeties. 😅
A blue flowerpot seen from the top with bare soil, a rock on the left, a blade of grass on the right and a handful of tiny seedlings sprouting from the soil.

I'm finally back home again from the hospital and am mobile enough to hobble into my garden (if the pain allows it). So I'm going to feast my eyes on everything alive. 🤩

So this bug was walking around on the mat outside, so I crouched down to take a picture (it's a BIG bug) and then it assumed defense position thinking I was going to attack it! #invert #insects

Turns out we don’t have to invoke weapons of mass destruction when talking about ocean heat uptake. The ocean absorbed a record-breaking 23 zettajoules of heat last year, equivalent to 40 times the energy used by humanity. It’s not going to end well.

World’s oceans absorbed record heat equal to 40 times annual global energy use
The injection of thermal energy comes amid an increasing rise in sea levels and continuing acidification

Want to conserve #birds, #mammals and other vertebrates? Then don’t forget their #insects. Our new Nature Reviews Biodiversity paper explores the many ways vertebrates depend on insects — for food, shelter, protection and much more. I’ve written about it here: jeffollerton.co.uk/2026/09/30/w...

Want to conserve birds and mammals? Then conserve their insects – our new paper in Nature Reviews Biodiversity sets out the details
It’s sometimes easy to forget quite how much of the living world depends upon insects. That might seem an odd thing for someone who has spent much of his career studying insects and their relations…

64 years ago, on the 27th of September 1962, Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring was published. It handled the environmental harm caused by the pesticide DDT and the disinformation spread by the chemical industry. Carson managed to sway public opinion and even policy. #otd #history 🗃️
