October Horror 2026, Day 1: George A. Romero's Resident Evil (2025, dir Brandon Salisbury) and Blood & Flesh: The Reel Life & Ghastly Death of Al Adamson (2019, dir David Gregory). Two documentaries, each about a different director well-versed in the horror genre. The former about Romero's failed attempt to adapt the Resident Evil game into a movie, and the latter about the career and horrific death of Adamson.

A good chunk of the Romero doc is spent summarizing his career both before and after the attempted adaptation, as well as on the origins and span of the Resident Evil games (and its various movie adaptations in existence at the time of the doc's release). This would be alright for the completely uninitiated, but who would come to this documentary unfamiliar with either?
As it stands, it feels like either a lot of padding for an otherwise relatively short doc, or lack of critical eye. I've seen other reviews compare this to an overview you might get from a YouTube streamer's post, and I think that nails the vibe.
Blood & Flesh, on the other hand, is a much more engaging insight into the heyday of fast cheap and loose B-movie/Drive-In/Grindhouse filmmaking (a la Corman but even more cheap and charmingly flimflam) via Al Adamson and friends. Well paced, lots of great anecdotes, and so many beautiful title cards and posters that oversell the movies they represent (which everyone in the docs is more than willing to cop to). The final leg morphs into a more modern mode of exploitation: true crime. A sort of classic TV tabloid piece about the events leading up to Adamson's truly sad and disturbing end. Not an unwarranted aspect to cover, if maybe a little too leering?

Totally agree with this post. I will say that tame Bugs works at sort of a meta level (though unintentionally), mirroring the way a lot of iconic comedic actors come off in their later years vs their original energy.
