Mixing critical & conceptual reflections at #4S2026 #4S26 w/ learning, skill development, & experimentation in public, creative, & not-academic contexts is my ideal version of a conference. Sometimes one can get both, like at many #DH & #CivicTech conferences. #HASTAC2023 was like. #DIW26

We're doing one of my fave activities in class this week: Looking up FDA warning letters (it's vitamins & supplements week) and then using the wayback machine to see the before and after results. 2020-2021 is a great time frame for this.

One of the stranger aspects of being in academia are the sometimes frequent moments of being accepted, awarded, or invited into something you feel really excited about, and immediately having to figure out "where and how add this to my CV?" for the next application in the pipeline.

"AI" makes every day stupider than the day before case in point 👇
One of the most heated discussions occurring on X at the moment is about the ethics of a GitHub project in which a person is running Saw-like "torture" and

"pain" experiments on a series of locally hosted large language models, causing a series of effective altruists and people who believe LLMs are sentient to beg GitHub to delete the project on the grounds that the Al is suffering and that this glorified text adventure game is somehow cruel. The saga is an outgrowth of several recent viral papers and blog posts that have sparked a wildly tiresome conversation about Al consciousness and the idea of "model welfare," which is essentially worrying about the "mental health" of Al bots and agents.

Last month, @gillianbrockell.com reported that not only does ICE abuse immigrants by shackling them for hours on end, they also torment them with mockery and denying bathroom breaks.
Then a man from Eritrea or Somalia, Barry isn’t sure which, began to beg the guards to let him use the lavatory. Barry chimed in with an appeal to decency, telling the guards, “Please consider us as human beings.” But the guards were boisterous by that point, he said, and they didn’t appreciate the man’s increasingly loud and desperate pleas crashing their party.

Barry watched as a guard turned and looked at the man dead in the face and said, “You. Can pee on. You.” Another guard laughed.

“After seeing that, I just kept my head down,” Barry, 52, told me over the phone last week.
