Competitive high school sports are not about gladiatorial domination; they exist to teach kids teamwork, comradery, promote exercise, and give them a sense of accomplishment. I can think of no better way to accomplish those goals than to compete alongside our trans brothers, sisters, and siblings.

I know the messed with the configuration of the Clue endings but that's probably different, too. Initially you got a random ending but eventually they labeled them so that people could see one they hadn't yet. I think eventually they had the edit that's on home video with all of them.

My degree’s in Linguistics so I read many of the studies that advocate for baby talk. We went the other direction and both our girls were verbal early and acquired language earlier than average. But I fully recognize those are anecdotal results and may not work for everybody.

And finally, there’s no one way to parent. The job, in my mind, is learning who your child is and what works for them. The more you watch and consider, the more of an expert you’ll become on what is likely to help them. They’ll change constantly and the approach should as well.

Stephen Colbert, while taking his own questionnaire, said that his earliest memory was wanting to tell his mom about a dream but not having the words at the age of 3. He remembers feeling extremely frustrated. Our girls watched a show that taught a few ASL signs and that helped bridge the gap.

Teach them media literacy. Walk them through how to study a film and then have them walk you through themes, the plot, and moments that landed for them every time you watch with them. Give them words by reading to them, with them, and then having them read to you.

Whenever possible, love the media, people, and things they love by asking why they love it. It won’t always be possible. Model kindness to them and encourage them to be the friend who is known for being kind by actively looking for their peers who seem hurt and isolated and befriending them.

Speak to them like you would any other adult from the earliest age. Use big words and let them use context to figure out the meanings or ask about it. Watch and note what approaches to learning work for them and lean in on those approaches, even when it’s different from their siblings.
