No dollar amount is worth more than human lives or well-being. EVER. Kicking a ball around is never ever ever ever worth more than keeping people safe. Not a backyard game, not a NWSL top of the table clash, not a World Cup final. That should be common sense.

Co-written with @poppywilde.bsky.social, our article is out now in @icsjournal.bsky.social. We analyse humorous bad taste Twitter reactions to the death of Prince Philip as a critique of the monarchy, and reflect on the ethics of researching controversial content on social media tinyurl.com/y62326fr
Abstract
When Prince Philip died on 9th April 2021 aged 99, the media coverage was extensive. Not only did the BBC dedicate wall-to-wall coverage to his passing (and received nearly 110,000 complaints from viewers for it), but social media, too, participated in what had quickly become a major media event. Social media remembrance has become an expected part of the death of a celebrity or well-known figure. However, what stood out in the Twitter activity, in particular, was not only sombre remembrance but also many instances of what can be considered bad-taste humour. Particularly prominent were comparisons of Philip to zombies, often including images of him. We explore the ways in which Twitter reactions to Prince Philip's death may highlight the monarchy as an outdated, presumably useless (yet undying) institution. The use of the zombie metaphor complicates the reading of these Tweets are merely offensive, as they are used to articulate resistance to royal power. We thus argue that the use of zombie metaphors in instances of bad taste, while considered offensive, may at the same time also offer a critique of the royal family as an institution at a particular moment in time and offer reflections on the ethics of researching controversial social media content.

My old man attempted a doctorate in the 80s but he didn't complete. This weekend he told me the real reason - he fell under the spell of the immense Orientalism & theology library at Durham and completely got sidetracked - reading! Totally relate to and celebrate this. Now think he's my real dad.

Tamworth could’ve earned £500k+ from a replay at Spurs: Gate receipts: £2m total (62k fans x £40 avg ticket), with Tamworth getting 55% (~£1.1m). TV fee: ~£85k for live broadcast. Merch & other revenue: Likely tens of thousands. Scrapping replays denies non-league clubs this vital income.

Fans are (quite rightly) critical and suspicious of multi-club ownership, not least because it has the potential to be exploitative -- but can MCOs also be a force for good? This is an excellent case study to add to our current research. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/footba...
