Interacting Galaxies NGC 1549 and NGC 1553 in the Dorado Group - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/2jybqyW
This very deep image shows the two large interacting galaxies NGC 1549 and NGC 1553 in the Dorado Group. Located around 60 million light years away towards the southern constellation Dorado, it is one of the richest galaxy groups of the Southern Hemisphere with 46 members and tens of additional candidate members.

The interaction of NGC 1549 and NGC 1553 appears to be in an early stage, and gravitational disruption in the form of irregular shells and tidal jet/arcs of material is clearly visible in both galaxies.

Between the two large galaxies a small fuzzy blob with a faint spiral structure is visible; perhaps a remnant core from an earlier interaction, similar to the one observed in the shell elliptical galaxy NGC 3923 in Hydra.

The largest of the galaxies is NGC 1549 to the North (top), discovered by John Herschel on 6 December 1835. It contains a supermassive black hole with an estimated mass between 390 and 810 million solar masses.

To the south lies NGC 1553; the second brightest member of the Dorado Group. It is an impressive lenticular galaxy with a prominent soft isophotic ring surrounding another highly structured ring encircling the centre. A further very small spiral structure is visible in the core. In 2000 an inner torus-like dust lane about 3″ across was observed by the Hubble Space Telescope at the galaxy's center. The galaxy is thought to host an obscured central active galactic nucleus (AGN).

In the lower left of the image lies the small edge-on spir...

8 Micron Spitzer View of the Galactic Core - From Judy Schmidt (geckzilla.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/2jW97dA
The same mosaics from this view except using the 8 micron data for luminosity, and the other three channels for color. This significantly reduces the starlight signal, though not totally. Still makes it much easier to see the dust and emission nebulas.

Note that much of the nebulosity is in the foreground as we view the Milky Way's center through one of the arms of the Milky Way. It is difficult to discern or even measure the distance to each piece, but generally, the larger structures that extend far away from flat central plane are foreground objects, while thinner, smaller pieces that remain close to the plane are closer to the core. Many of these smaller objects are overlapped and obscured by mid and foreground objects.

Luminosity: 8.0 µm (IRAC4)
Red: 5.8 µm (IRAC3)
Green: 4.5 µm (IRAC2)
Blue: 3.6 µm (IRAC1)

The image is presented in galactic coordinates, with north up in that regard.

The Swan Nebula - Optical/Infrared Comparison - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/fsFLfD
This image shows the bright nebula Messier 17, also known as the Swan Nebula or the Omega Nebula.
This nebula is located about 6000 light years away in the constellation of Sagittarius. It was discovered by Swiss astronomer Philippe Loys de Chéseaux in 1745 and later catalogued by Charles Messier in 1764.
The central part of the nebula is lit up by a cluster of extremely bright young O and B type stars. It is one of the brightest and most massive star forming regions in our galaxy and appears very similar in spatial structure to the famous Orion Nebula, but the Swan is viewed more edge-on from our vantage point. The nebula is also very bright visually, actually much more so than its famous neighbour the Eagle Nebula - which traditionally is the more photographed of the two.

Visible above the nebula is a pair of very unique bright orange stars. These are LBV (Luminous Blue Variable) type stars HD 168607 and HD 168625 respectively, two rare yellow hypergiants that might have formed what is known as a pseudo-photosphere. This is a theoretical optically dense surface present due to intense stellar winds and thus not the actual surface of the star. This pseudo-photosphere is much cooler than the underlying surface of the star and therefore appears yellow to us. The right-most of these two stars in the image (HD 168625) also has an associated complex nebulousity surrounding. This nebula appears very similar to the double ring structure observed around Sandulaek -69° 202 which w...

Centaurus A Extreme Deep Field - 130 Hours - Sep 2019 - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/2hk73QH
The Deepest View Ever Obtained of Centaurus A (NGC 5128)
New improved version with 10 hours of H-Alpha, Sep 2019
In 2013 I gathered 120 hours of data on Centaurus A, and processed the deepest image ever obtained of this magnificent galaxy showing many features and structures not revealed by amateurs before.
In Feb 2014 I released an improved version of the image with higher resolution, processed using PixInsight.
Then in 2018 I again acquired further data (for what is evidently a never-ending project…), this time in the H-Alpha wavelength. This new re-processed image incorporates the H-Alpha data in order to highlight the impressive emission structures triggered by the relativistic jet from the supermassive central black hole. It also emphasises the many pink hydrogen clouds in the dark dust lane across the centre of the galaxy, and lastly I feel the image showcases the concentric shells and rich background slightly better, while keeping a reasonably subtle natural look.

About the Image
This image is the realisation of a long time dream of mine: Taking a deep sky image with more than 100 hours of exposure.
I set out on this mission in early 2013 and after having gathered 130 hours of data on 46 different nights in 2013 and 2018 I present what I believe is the deepest view ever obtained of Centaurus A. This is likely also the deepest image ever taken with amateur equipment, showing stars as faint as magnitude 25.45.
I spent around 40 hours and analysing processing the data...
