A Dead Letter

Caught in mid fall by a thread
from a spider a leaf or samsara
twirls. It can neither return

or find soil or sustenance,
a life suspended between
it cannot return to its branch.

It awaits the breakage of the thread
to continue its journey to concrete
or soil, or blown onto plastic.

AFTER HOURS isn't interested in resurrecting the 1950s. The Beats already happened. We're interested in what survived them: restlessness, introspection, social criticism, experimentation and the suspicion that poetry should risk something.
