My husband’s response to a poem I wrote about my ex and I watching sea lions give birth + me realizing I never want to have kids: “that is definitely a Steven poem” I adore being read by this man—in every sense of the word 😂❤️

Honored to have a new poem published by @glasspoetry.bsky.social today. It’s about my Queerness, my grandma, and being glamorous af. I also didn’t realize it would be coming out a couple of days after her birthday. Happy birthday, grandma.

It shouldn't matter if Trump’s victims have criminal records. If we only defend the “innocent,” the fascists will argue that their victim “was no angel.” An anti-fascist rhetoric that carves out exceptions for imperfect victims is a gift to our opponents. New from me for @us.theguardian.com:

It didn’t harm the anti-abortionists when someone got an abortion. It didn’t harm cis people when someone changed their gender marker. It didn’t harm anyone when a teenager used hormone blockers. Fake outrage causes real damage. It’s about control, not about preventing harm.

Just because you can't control every terrible thing doesn't mean you're powerless. Find a way to DO something. Think small, think local. Here's today's suggestion: train to become a practical support volunteer and support people traveling to access abortion care. apiaryps.org/pollination-...

Let’s see you at 21. This was in a K-Mart fitting room. It was the last time I’d go to a Black Friday with my grandma, the only person in my family who was nothing but happy for me when she found out I was gay and in love.

This is such a powerful poem by Hieu Minh Nguyen (@hieuminh.bsky.social). If you ever felt "not enough" for your parents or where raised in a "thin is good!" / diet culture home, this one if for you. It's one of my all-time favorite poems.
Changeling

By Hieu Minh Nguyen

Standing in front of a mirror, my mother tells me she is ugly
says the medication is making her fat. I laugh & walk her
back to the bed. My mother tells me she is ugly in the same voice
she used to say no woman could love you & I watch her
pull at her body & it is mine. My heavy breast.
My disappointing shape. She asks for a bowl of plain broth
& it becomes the cup of vinegar she would pour down my throat.
Everyday after school, I would kneel before her.
I would remove my clothes & ask her to mark the progress.
It’s important that I mention, I truly wanted to be beautiful
for her. In my dreams I am thin & if not thin, something better.
I tell my mother she is still beautiful & she laughs. The room fills
with flies. They gather in the shape of a small boy. They lead her
back to the mirror, but my reflection is still there.

Because maybe you need this poem as much as I do.
The Thing Is
BY ELLEN BASS

to love life, to love it even
when you have no stomach for it
and everything you’ve held dear
crumbles like burnt paper in your hands,
your throat filled with the silt of it.
When grief sits with you, its tropical heat
thickening the air, heavy as water
more fit for gills than lungs;
when grief weights you down like your own flesh
only more of it, an obesity of grief,
you think, How can a body withstand this?
Then you hold life like a face
between your palms, a plain face,
no charming smile, no violet eyes,
and you say, yes, I will take you
I will love you, again.

Watched Netflix’s HOT FROSTY, expecting a cheesy, spicy, Christmas Rom-Com. (It is) But it made me realize how, when I’m around people I love, I often think about how one of us will die first (and how that drastically shapes my relationships with people). I just wanted a sexy snowman.

This is still my advice: Become a writer anyway. Fuck it, do it, it won't save you, but it's still a beautiful dream to write novels and short stories and poems and mingle with other dreamers and make art and laugh in the face of death. And writing is constant death. Live más.
