not to downplay what my math friends are going through but I think this metaphor applies to so much of modern life for so many people www.quantamagazine.org/is-ai-the-en...
It's as if you were teleported to the peak of a tall mountain. Surrounded by fog, you have no idea where you are, or what's around you. You do not know how your mountain connects to others, and you have no equipment to help you explore, no way to help someone else join you. If you had climbed the mountain yourself, you would have experienced how the human body adapts to altitude and changes in oxygen levels. You might have had to invent tools to navigate, to climb steep cliffs, or to make a shelter. You might have encountered a fellow explorer, gotten lost together in a hidden valley, and found a plant that could be turned into a life-saving medicine.
Instead you're perched on the peak but in the dark, while the maker of the teleportation machine tells you that it can explore the wilderness better than any human.

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

My company was built around C++ Builder decades ago. I'm so glad there are other developers out there trying to figure out how to make it fully integrated with the current C++ clang open-source movement. Thanks, Volker Hillman!

C++Builder is often treated as something of an exotic species within the wider C++ world. Sometimes that is said with a smile, sometimes quite seriously.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

#TIFF Movie #5 - The Spiral - 5/10 I dunno, man. One of the best ways for the rest of the world to support Canada right now would be to shift some of their buying of the affected commodities (softwood lumber, electronics, aluminum, steel) to Canada, or to offer us well-priced products that we usually buy from the US.

"Oh, she says, well, you're not a poor man. You know, why don't you go online and buy a hundred envelopes and put them in the closet? And so I pretend not to hear her. And go out to get an envelope because I'm going to have a hell of a good time in the process of buying one envelope. I meet a lot of people. And see some great looking babies. And a fire engine goes by. And I give them the thumbs up. And I ask a woman what kind of dog that is. And, and I don't know. The moral of the story is — we're here on Earth to fart around. And, of course, the computers will do us out of that. And what the computer people don't realize, or they don't care, is we're dancing animals. You know, we love to move around. And it's like we're not supposed to dance anymore."

The price of eggs—the thing that launched a thousand vibecession headlines… was a lie.
The federal government began its investigation as the average wholesale price of a dozen eggs in the United States reached a record high of about $6.23 in March 2025, exacerbated by an avian flu outbreak and elevated fuel, feed and packaging costs.
"No product more quintessentially represents affordability than the price Americans pay for eggs," Stanley E.
Woodward Jr., the associate attorney general, said in a statement on Tuesday.
Investigators said the companies conspired from June 2022 to March 2025 to limit the production of eggs so they would not meet demand and then placed a high volume of bids with the Egg Clearinghouse Inc., a national egg exchange, to drive up prices.
