not to downplay what my math friends are going through but I think this metaphor applies to so much of modern life for so many people www.quantamagazine.org/is-ai-the-en...
It's as if you were teleported to the peak of a tall mountain. Surrounded by fog, you have no idea where you are, or what's around you. You do not know how your mountain connects to others, and you have no equipment to help you explore, no way to help someone else join you. If you had climbed the mountain yourself, you would have experienced how the human body adapts to altitude and changes in oxygen levels. You might have had to invent tools to navigate, to climb steep cliffs, or to make a shelter. You might have encountered a fellow explorer, gotten lost together in a hidden valley, and found a plant that could be turned into a life-saving medicine.
Instead you're perched on the peak but in the dark, while the maker of the teleportation machine tells you that it can explore the wilderness better than any human.

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

How Exotic Is C++Builder 13?
C++Builder is often treated as something of an exotic species within the wider C++ world. Sometimes that is said with a smile, sometimes quite seriously.

As long as we don't misdiagnose the patient. My fear about moving quickly to healing is that we don't address the root causes that led to the disease. For example, I think that Ford pardoning Nixon set one of the worst precedents. I don't want to elect a "We must look forwards not backwards" admin.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

it was predictable, ultimately unsatisfying piece with more holes in the plot than you'd find in a game of Portal. The stakes kept rising in a completely predictable way only to have the denouement show us that none of it was necessary. Not a great start to my Midnight Madness experience.

#TIFF Movie #5 - The Spiral - 5/10 I dunno, man. After the way Obsession blew-up last year after its screening at Midnight Madness, I don't know that they needed to schedule yet *another* Monkey's Paw type horror, albeit more of a psychological one. I had high hopes for this one nonetheless, but ...

After casting his daughter in his new period piece, Bardem walks a tightrope between directing his actor and re-establishing his relationship with her. They each have very different memories of their past, and anyone with a difficult family situation will definitely feel seen.

#TIFF Movie #4 - The Beloved (7/10) I really enjoyed this character study about a long-estranged father (Javier Bardem) and his daughter (a compelling Victoria Luengo) by an actress who worked in a film he had directed. You could see this movie just for the first scene of their rapprochement.

I have *so many questions*, but I'm not going to spoil the film. It gets worldwide release in a couple of weeks, and then I'll be able to try to find answers. The actors show great vulnerability - kudos to the entire crew/cast for the risks they've taken. I want all the best for this film.

In the first half you don't know if this is a buddy movie, a coming-of-age story, a gangster film, an action flick or a Bollywood movie (there's a dance scene!). And just when you've finally decided it doesn't matter, the movie shifts gears completely in the second half.

#TIFF movie #3 - Dorothy (7/10) THIS is why I love @tiffnet.bsky.social. I get to see a movie from a culture I don't understand very well, in Tamil, using film conventions and vocabulary that I'm almost completely unfamiliar with, and yet I walk out knowing I'm going to think about it for days.

are shown in all of their shades of grey as frightened, angry, horny, high, funny and irascible. It was really refreshing to see them all presented as fully-formed humans (no pun intended) rather than caricatures. I imagine that if it qualifies you might see this on some Oscar prediction lists.

It's easy for movies like this about inspiring figures to descend into mawkish sentimentality or hagiography, but this movie avoids that at every turn. The deaf protestors have beef with the group in wheelchairs, Judy is no angel, and the amazingly cast group of (actually) disabled protestors...
