If you care at all about land use reform and smarter transportation in Minnesota, listen to this. @ianrbuck.bsky.social put in a ton of effort, countless hours of interviews and background research. Thank you to every organization who discussed the session with us!

I saw an image from some city probably in Europe that inspired that idea, and I've been disappointed that I've never managed to find that picture again.

Well, if they write a book, that would make it easier to have them on a book club episode! Aside from that, we usually seek out guests who have a Minnesota connection.

Yeah, the language says that the light must stay red "for an unreasonable time" and that the light must be malfunctioning or won't change because it hasn't detected the bicycle. Which are all pretty hard to determine concretely when you're out in the field! www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cit...

Pretty bummed that they're not fully implementing the W 7th St plan that St Paul and Metro Transit announced last year. It might come in bits and pieces, but I'm afraid that we'll be stuck with aBRT for a long long time.

Someone remake “It’s a Wonderful Life” but Mr. Potter believes that hoarding is morally required so he can devote resources to delivering a far future with trillions of humans while George Bailey is like, “Gosh Darnit! What if taking care of people today is what takes care of people in the future?!”

I don't think that the problem is political campaigns on the left not creating good YouTube content; the problem is with the habit of watching 3+ hours of YouTube a day. Bowling Alone found TV watch time to be the strongest correlation with low social capital, and this seems like the modern equiv.

Minneapolis bike pals! Anyone looking for a 1 bedroom apartment (first floor) in a quadplex of other bike people? Locked garage available, secure underground storage too, cat friendly, and you get to be my neighbor! Rent is approx $1,000 a month and includes water, trash, heat.

That was my first instinct, but the direct distance often doesn't reflect our real-world experiences. Barriers like rivers or highways can make two points feel farther apart, and amenities like rapid transit and bike trails can make two points feel closer together.

Consider that those are tasks that can be done by transit ambassadors, and it's better if those tasks aren't done by someone who is also trying to focus on operating a vehicle. That should be the goal of automating transit vehicles.

I was imagining this meme while biking past a mile of backed up cars with @ianrbuck.bsky.social on Marshall Avenue in Saint Paul earlier this week, and he made it real!
Meme with two images. The first has a person captioned with "I-94 construction gridlock" and the character saying "I feel bad for you" and the second is captioned with "bike commuters" saying "I don't think about you at all."

I'm going to blame one here instead of zero. There's no reason that we had to have a singular case at all; in Esperanto, for example, the word "estas" means "is/are" regardless of how many things there are.

The members of the state legislature who represent our urban core would never go for an arrangement that isn't population representative. And since the legislature is population representative, we should be safe there.
020
Ian R Buck @ianrbuck.bsky.social · 08/03/2025
That may be so, but Hennepin and Ramsey would have more representatives for their greater population. And having to balance the needs of the urban core and the suburbs is way better than having Metro area decisions being at the whims of voters from across the state.
