Sad view of an agonising giant! 😢 Front of Aletsch Glacier - Aug. 2026 Bedrock is now outcropping for 1st time, splitting ice tongue in two! 📈 Ice thickness loss >15 m here (1635 m asl) this summer! 🧊🔥 Last year, I was standing on the front, beyond small ice remnant in the lake 📷 Kurt Steiner 🙏

The #Pasterze at the #Großglockner holds the longest continuous length-change record of any glacier in the Alps, one of the clearest records we have of glacier retreat. Every metre the ice pulls back leaves fresh terrain behind. That is where our work last week began. 🧵 1/4

Question: do I know anyone near Nantes who would be willing to pick up a dead gull-billed tern and its logger? L49 has sadly been killed near a road. I’d be very grateful for a picture and the logger and would of course reimburse postage.

When Einstein developed general relativity the closest thing to a practical application that could even be imagined at the time was a slightly more precise description of where to look for the planet Mercury in the sky, and yet now we’d all be literally lost without it. Anyway: fund basic research.

For how much longer will it be possible to carry out national 'glacier inventories'? 🔥🧊 The latest Austrian glacier inventory (AGI 5, mostly representing 2023) shows that glaciers cover 285 km² and that 129 km² were lost since AGI 3 (~2010)! 📈😲 A third lost in less than two decades! 😱
