Amazing that a council development under a tight budget has won the Stirling Prize for #architecture. The article linked is very positive about it. Having seen this in real life though (but only from the outside), the shade of brown brick is a very dead colour and I wasn't given a very good […]

This was the best sunset I caught this autumn (on a day with a totally clear weather forecast, no less!). Above the town of Ophir, with Mt Wilson and the San Miguel Range beyond. See more photos from this autumn in the #SanJuanMountains, #Colorado here: www.mountainphotography.com/gallery/mons...

The lump of gypsum on my desk on a #SilentSunday morning
A block of gypsum about 8c centimetres thick on a wooden desk. It is lit by sunlight and sparkles. Gypsum bands grow as vertical needles across horizontal beds, and the vertical crystals can be seen on the broken sides. A vein or relict of dark brown mudstone can be seen halfway up the near edge but it doesn't persist far into the gypsum.

I don't doubt that there are areas of deprivation in H&F, but on average it is one of the more affluent parts of London. There are deprived areas of Coventry too! Also, let's take a moment to think about how unfair council tax is in the UK. It can be wildly different in different councils. For […]

It sounds drastic, and it means an increase from £1500 per year to £2500 per year for someone in Band D. So they are talking about 150% increase in the Hammersmith and Fulham council's part of the council tax (approx. £1000 is H&F and £500 is Greater London Authority). But in Coventry we are […]

Partial #eclipse shadows dancing through the wisteria onto a white plastered wall. In #Coventry , UK
A white plastered wall in an open porch is shown. The sunlight is coming through a wisteria plant that grows over the front and side of the porch and the gaps between leaf shadows are often small enough to act as pinholes and small crescent shapes of sunlight appear.
