some time after a fur reaches adulthood - typically only a couple of years - and occcurring almost exclusively in those of species that would naturally predate, there is an incredibly small chance (~1 in 10000, or maybe even less) they will develop into a predator.

they grow taller, get a stronger and more pliant gut, become less sated by typical food, and, most importantly: they develop the intense hunger for the bodies of those around them.

typically these changes are met with shame and resistance. they try to quell these horrible desires, shove their hunger deep down until eventually they cannot do so anymore and they break. the first unlucky prey often ends up being a close friend or partner.

they'll typically go for those of species that are smaller, and prey to their own. a fox might eat bunnies and mice, and a wolf might eat all three plus some sheep. but some just go for whomever is able to fit down their throat, whether or not they would in the wild.

it's a well kept secret (suspension of disbelief, i believe in you). the population doesnt know that living within their quaint little society are these insatiable predators who seek to consume them!
