I’d heard years ago that this is the stuff you want if you’re making pumpkin spice coffee drinks at home. Torani Pumpkin sauce (NOT the syrup). Searched high and low for years, and couldn’t find it, until this year! Found it at World Market. Gotta say, it does live up to the hype, it’s just right.
Torani Puremade Sauce in Pumpkin Pie flavor. It’s in a small plastic squeeze bottle, not the big clear bottles like their more common flavor syrups.

Ooh, that does sound intriguing. Does “sal al gusto” = “salt to taste”? Because sal al gusto sounds way more fun.

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

David Quammen's essay in The New York Times today closes with this paragraph. It's both a scientific falsehood, and an incredibly dangerous narrative. If you're willing to give me five minutes of your time, I'd like to explain why.
The Ebola virus doesn’t need to spill back. It abides in its reservoir host, and awaits its next opportunity. A virus can’t climb out of a bat or a monkey and fly off in search of human prey. It can only spill over. If humans left the reservoir host alone — not hunting it, not capturing it, not eating it, not exporting it live, not disturbing its forest habitat — the virus wouldn’t re-emerge in humans. It would remain where it is, harming no one. But of course that’s not what happens. And when viruses spill, they often spill into us, because the human population is such a big, busy target.

I got vaxxed! I made a same-day appointment and it took less than 10 minutes. The pharmacist told me it’s really going around right now. Stay safe friends! 😷💉
Drawing of Tatiana dressed as a superhero with a band aid on each arm. Text says, “I got vaxxed! Covid, Flu. Covid is at high level in WA.”
The superhero is thinking “I’m a good damn hero.*” and underneath “* totally did it for myself, but it also protects others!”

For my birthday, I got to go to Omnivore Books, a sweet little bookstore in SF’s Noe Valley that is just for cookbooks. Picked up six books, six was a theme. Mostly books about using seasonal produce, plus some pasta books, and a baking book.
Six cookbooks:

- Six California Kitchens, by Sally Schmitt
- Six Seasons of Pasta (signed), by Joshua McFadden
- Making Artisan Pasta, by Aliza Green
- Sift, by Nicola Lamb

Yeah, I never managed to become one of those mad beasts on the command line (tho I got my start on a mainframe, so I’m comfortable). I do suppose it might be like that. But for whatever reason, grep’s power tickled me so much. I never tired of playing with it. It always felt like doing magic.

the new paper on bouba/kiki in chicks is utterly compelling canonical, elegant method from comparative cogsci & its partner in developmental science, ultra-simple design, ultra-clear effects, no need for fancy analyses, machine learning, or AI it appeared in an appropriately badass venue (Science)
Matching sounds to shapes: Evidence of the bouba-kiki effect in naïve baby chicks Maria Loconsole1*, Silvia Benavides-Varela2,3, Lucia Regolin1 Humans across multiple languages spontaneously associate the nonwords “kiki” and “bouba” with spiky and round shapes, respectively, a phenomenon named the bouba-kiki effect. To explore the origin of this association, and whether it is unique to humans, we tested the bouba-kiki effect in baby domestic chickens (Gallus gallus). as a precocial species, chicks can be tested shortly after hatching, allowing us to control their pretest experiences. Similar to humans, both 3-day-old [experiment 1 (exp. 1)] and 1-day-old (exp. 2) chicks spontaneously choose a spiky shape when hearing the “kiki” sound and a round shape when hearing the “bouba” sound. results from naïve young animals suggest a predisposed mechanism for matching the dimensions of shape and sound, which may be widespread across species.main fig from the paper showing the association between bouba/round and kiki/spiky in newborn chicks
