The reason for the trip was the memorial service for my professor (I was one of his research assistants) A Hungarian refugee who learned English by reading Lincoln’s speeches, and became a preeminent scholar on Lincoln (& a complete goofball, as seen in this shot from a friend’s student film)

In grad school, I took a class on memory and the atomic bomb, which included an extended trip to Hiroshima & Nagasaki for the anniversaries of the bombings. We toured sites, attended memorial events, and had the honor of meeting many hibakusha. It is not exaggerating to say it was life-changing.

Students that we were paired with from Kyoto University hanging our 1000 paper cranes (the Americans were far too slow to contribute much at all)

Writing on a chalkboard in Fukuro-machi Elementary School in Hiroshima where survivors wrote messages to find loved ones. The school was 450m from the hypocenter, and only three students survived that were in the basement.

Gutted to hear about Glen Hansard's passing. The songs from ONCE never fail to get me choked up & I saw him perform a 1.5 hour set in DC that ended with the entire venue singing The Parting Glass. One of the most beautiful moments one could ask for. We deserved so much more time with him.
