So, it's #BlackFriday, to be followed by #CyberMonday. Some thoughts on consumerism, acquisition, all that stuff and gadgets, and living simply. (From @britishquakers.bsky.social QF&P Chapter 25.09 qfp.quaker.org.uk/passage/25-09/, and Advices and Queries no.41 qfp.quaker.org.uk/passage/1-02/)

Image of text as follows (same as at the first page of "Quaker Faith and Practice" linked above in the post):

25.09

I want to list ten controlling principles for the outward expression of simplicity. They should not be viewed as laws but as one attempt to flesh out the meaning of simplicity into twentieth-century life. First, buy things for their usefulness rather than their status. Second, reject anything that is producing an addiction in you. Third, develop a habit of giving things away. De-accumulate. Fourth, refuse to be propagandised by the custodians of modern gadgetry. Fifth, learn to enjoy things without owning them. Sixth, develop a deeper appreciation for the creation. Seventh, look with a healthy scepticism at all ‘buy now, pay later’ schemes. Eighth, obey Jesus’ injunction about plain, honest speech. Ninth, reject anything that will breed the oppression of others. Tenth, shun whatever would distract you from your main goal.

Richard J Foster, 1979

Image of text as follows (same as paragraph 41 of the second page pf "Quaker Faith and Practice" linked above in the post):

41.

Try to live simply. A simple lifestyle freely chosen is a source of strength. Do not be persuaded into buying what you do not need or cannot afford. Do you keep yourself informed about the effects your style of living is having on the global economy and environment?

Most of the time Twitter is a pretty toxic place, but other times someone tries to make Jesus into a racist and the official Community Notes are like “not today!”

Twitter interaction where someone says we don’t have to love people who are from other countries.

The "bluesky is an echo chamber" think pieces that keep popping up really tickle me because they show how certain people genuinely believe social media should be for debating and arguing and not talking about the things that make you happy and sharing art with the world.

It's just occurred to me that maybe this is a way to think about it: Twitter was our first attempt at what this kind of social media could be, and how we could be with it. It was inevitable that some things wouldn't work out quite right. But here, we get another go? Let's try and get this one right.

"Before you speak to me about your religion, first show it to me in how you treat other people..." - Cory Booker

Image of text as follows:

"Before you speak to me about your religion, first show it to me in how you treat other people; before you tell me how much you love your God, show me in how much you love all His children; before you preach to me of your passion for your faith, teach me about it through your compassion for your neighbors. In the end, I'm not as interested in what you have to tell or sell as I am in how you choose to live and give."

What if loving our neighbour (and the stranger, and our enemies) is actually the way (and indeed the *only* way?) to love God, and in turn experience God's love? 1 John 4:12 - "No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us."

Once again I find myself wondering (as I have from time 2 time) why the 2 components of Matt 22:37-40 were presented the way around they were, in terms of priority order. Or if He could have said them swapped over. And in particular what difference it might have made *if they had been*. Maybe a lot.

Text of Matthew 22:37-40

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

So I've set the BlueSky app to dark mode and smaller font just like I have Twitter. Then followed a hundred or so key people. At that point it's actually pretty easy to forget which one you're in. Except for which voices are here, and which aren't. That difference is noticeable.

Cars in the U.K are up to 55% larger today than they were in the 1970s and there are twice the number of cars on the U.K's roads as there were 30 years ago, but the media are still running articles claiming that a handful of cycle lanes and LTNs 'cause congestion' in London...🙄
