Did you know a Quaker teetotaler helped turn root beer into an American icon? 🥤 Philadelphia pharmacist Charles Hires (1851–1937) first tasted a root-based drink on his honeymoon in 1875. He loved the flavor, but the original concoction was also a powerful laxative.

Vultures ! Fun fact: well technically, a bird of prey, vultures do not hunt or kill live animals. They only clean up after other hunters have done their work, thus minimizing disease and general uckiness. #Raptors #BirdOfTheDay Photo credit is shown in the photographs.
Apologizing for not knowing the location nor the species, but this vulture standing on a horizontal branch is clearly glaring at the photographer, wondering if he is, indeed, still alive.I like the contrast in this photograph of a black vulture in Costa Rica. Vultures only eat dead things, which seems kind of grim, while this photograph has vibrant colors from flowers, green leaves, and a lively fall of rain.

Today’s #BirdOTheDay theme is #FlowerPower. I have chosen four of my spouse’s photos of birds common in North America, and perhaps three of them are not well known to most of you who see this. American robin Common yellowthroat Bushtit Great egret
A Robin stands proudly in a sea of grass and English daisies, with a few small yellow flowers that I don’t know how to identify. The bush tit is a small tan bird with grayish wings and tail feathers. It is seated here on a branch surrounded by small red flowers. The common yellow throat is, as expected, a yellow bird with a white head, but also sporting a black mask that covers the lower eye and beak and cheek area. This one is perched on a stalk with a few purple lupin blossoms. A great egret in the mid distance stands in profile facing left in a small pond. The view foreground frames the bird with stalks of purple fireweed blossoms.

#BirdOfTheDay #Iridescence Hummingbirds! Apologies for only knowing the name of one of them: a red one with the white cap. He or she is a “snowcap”. These photographs from last fall in Costa Rica by my spouse. [IG peytond_photo] in case you’re curious: academy.allaboutbirds.org/how-birds-ma...
A pair of gloriously iridescent hummingbirds, almost facing each other. It’s almost impossible to describe the colors, but there’s lots of purple, blues, greens…I’m pretty sure this fellow is called a Violet ear., but they run it together, as one word: violetear. His feathers are ruffled and mostly a brilliant Green; the jet black eye shows a reflection of a bright sky, and the feathers near where you might think a hummingbird’s ear would be are, as you might guess, violet, and dark blue. This little beauty is perched on a branch facing the photographer. Most of the neck is a Block of brilliant neon Green, but the lower part of the chest is a deep, deep blue. Just above the beak and flowing over the head are some purple feathers, but the rest of the head is jet black, as are the wings. This is the one called a snowcap: pure, white feathers extend from the top of the beak, up to the middle of the head. But the rest of the bird is glorious colors including magenta, violets, oranges, and yellows…
