The correct response to this would be to make all the evidence used to draw the conclusion public, then challenge Farage to respond, otherwise people will just pick their opinions on the matter based purely on who they trust.

No but two things are necessary. Rejoin needs an overwhelming democratic mandate probably a referendum. Much more difficult to overcome ‘the will of the people’. And Labour need to win the next election to see it through. Neither improbable asks.

Hard Brexit

Leaked Treasury papers reveal lost revenue

Cabinet ministers are being warned
that the Treasury could lose up_to
£66 billion a year in tax revenues under
"hard Brexit", according to leaked
government papers.

GDP.could fall by as much as 9.5 per
cent if Britain leaves the single market
and hastorely on WorldTrade Organi-
sation rules for trading with the conti-
nent, compared with ifit stayed within
the EU,theforecasts show.Such a steep
drop in revenue would force ministers
to slash public spending or raise taxes.
The £66 billion drop, contained in a
draft cabinet committee paper seen by
The Times, is nearly a tenth of the
£716 billion that the government is pro-
jected to collect in taxes this year, and is
equivalent to 65 per cent of the annual
budget of NHS England.

Business leaders are_increasingly
worried that the UK could fail to nego-
tiate a deal with the 27 remaining EU
members by the time it leaves the
union, and will face a "cliff edge" of
trade tariffs and barriers,

Several cabinet ministers who sup-
ported Remain are stepping up efforts
to prioritise business concerns and the
economy in Brexit discussions, fearing
that Leave supporters fail to realise the
scale of potential damage, It comes as:;
○ Theresa May faces a potential legal
challenge by a group of Conservative
MPs over the decision to begin Brexit
negotiations without parliament's
approval. The prime minister's spokes-
man ruledoutgiving MPs a voteyester-
day,saying thatitwould"second guess'
the will of the British people.
○ Dominic Grieve, the former attor-
ney-general, said that unless the gov,
ernment could agree,a deal supported
by parliament it would not survive.

The BBC is already giving Nigel Farage coverage for a speech he hasn’t even delivered. Report on what he says tomorrow, by all means. But previewing it now gives him free publicity and lets him set the agenda before anyone can scrutinise his words.

LET THEM GO BUST ! Last year, Thames Water took out a £3bn loan - at 9.75% interest. And now they want another £2.4bn to keep going?! ENOUGH. If water companies can't survive without rip-off loans, they should be declared insolvent and brought into public hands through special administration.

I am not sure the Tories matter at the moment and whilst they stubbornly stick at around 20% support. It will though need a vote whether at a GE or in a referendum to prove we are serious. Can’t see any opposition party opposing the ‘will of the people’.

To describe the Tories as the major opposition party on 20% is a bit of a stretch. Even with 120MPs they are nowhere near power. If labour wins the next election on a manifesto including rejoin and then confirms it with a referendum there is no chance they will reverse the will of the people.

As I’ve said elsewhere, these are my mates, you can quite likely win them over on a policy platform of cutting their taxes. You can’t win them over if you force it through a prism of “I think Brexit is a great idea and isn’t that net zero dodgy?” You just come across as unhinged to that cohort

As long as the Tories are threatening to leave the ECHR, they aren’t a serious party. Consider it the ultimate red flag. Any party who’d take this entirely unnecessary and ruinous risk with our rights and our country’s security and wellbeing should never get its hands on power. (Letter, Times)
Value of the
ECHR
Sir, In dangerous times, serious countries do not retreat into splendid isolation. They build alliances, multiply their influence and strengthen institutions. Key among those is the 46-member Council of Europe, at its heart the European Convention on Human Rights. As former independent reviewers of terrorism legislation we have seen at close quarters that the ECHR is not just a human rights instrument. It is a national security asset. Terrorist networks, hostile states, organised crime gangs and people smugglers do not respect borders. Tackling them requires arrangements for the closest possible co-operation with our neighbours, including through joint investigations and police access to European passenger, fingerprint, DNA and vehicle data. These arrangements expressly depend on internationally agreed human rights standards, applied by a supranational court. We detect no political willingness to excuse the UK from compliance with standards to which the rest of Europe already subscribes. As authoritarian powers grow more aggressive and democratic institutions face mounting pressure, Britain should not be abandoning one of its greatest postwar achievements.
The question is not whether we can afford to remain within the ECHR. It is whether, in an increasingly perilous world, we can afford not to.
