Rolling annualized 10-year returns of stocks over bonds have rarely been so extreme. Real yields now rival many quantitative forecasts of expected equity returns. The idea behind diversification isn't that we have a strong understanding of how things will turn out, but precisely that no one knows.

"Ed Sheeran had an opportunity show that we won't be bullied into punishing people for supporting Palestine. Instead he caved to people who refuse to accept what the world knows. A genocide is happening in Gaza. We all need to speak out against it.

Black-and-white historical photograph of Jane Addams (1860–1935), the pioneering social worker, suffragist, and first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Addams is seated at a dark wooden desk, her body angled toward the viewer while her right hand holds a pen poised over a piece of correspondence. She is dressed in a formal, dark, three-quarter-sleeve jacket over a white, high-collared lace blouse. Her most striking accessory is a large, dark, wide-brimmed hat adorned with voluminous, light-colored feathers. A thin dark ribbon is tied closely around her neck, and a long, fine chain hangs over her chest. Her expression is composed and serious, characterized by heavy-lidded eyes and a direct gaze that conveys intellectual focus and resolve. To the viewer's left, a tall glass vase filled with light-colored roses sits on the desk, providing a soft contrast to the room's spare, interior background. The composition is a classic portrait that captures the dignity of a woman whose work at Hull House transformed American social reform. The mood is scholarly and dignified, highlighting her status as a leading public intellectual of the Progressive Era.

A US official said Cook attended the St Petersburg forum as chair of the US Commission of Fine Arts to further bilateral cultural ties.

But the Russia trip carried heavy symbolism for the prospect of reviving diplomacy.

At a panel called “Russia-US: Dialogue of Cultures”, Cook displayed photographs of his own “dacha” in Atlanta, which he said was built in the “Russian wooden vernacular, which has touched my heart over the decades”.

He then gave a lengthy presentation on the historic Russian churches, public buildings and country homes he has helped renovate since he first visited the country in the 1990s.

“I know Russian culture, and I know most of the leadership of their cultural institutions,” he told the FT. The roundtable of senior Russian officials and cultural dignitaries, some of whom are under US sanctions, “included most of my old friends, which was really a great homecoming”, Cook added. “The personal connection between all of us was very clear.”
