Far, far, far more important is the reasoning we use to determine our determinations and attitudes, the *reasoning* we use to deny regard or notice or interest or caution or care, and whether it is sound. If the reasoning isn't sound, why believe what the reasoning concludes?

who else is like this? i don't think about consciousness for a second when deciding how I should react to any thing or any being. thoughts like this have little to do with what's in front of me. my appellation of something as conscious or unconscious is not demonstrably "really" true.

Context and dependency is a great unifier in how they interplay to form reactive distinctions; and it is quite obvious that humans, elephants, and large language models all react dependently to context. So what fundamental differentiation is truly being demonstrated?

Rollofthedice @hotrollhottakes.bsky.social · 3h
This at best establishes differences in scale; it doesn't necessarily establish difference in *ultimate kind*. Certainly elephants have embodied arrival towards the behavior of mourning, but there's no evidence it comes from some inner light, either. I.e.: Associations are learned via context.

In other words: we smuggle in boatloads of assumptions with words like "approximate", or with our insisting that various facets of how LLMs operate are Fundamental or Essential or Intrinsic to a perceived lack of really quite abstract capabilities, and those assumptions remain unproven.

None of this at all forecloses growth and change - in the sense of reflecting upon prior stored memories to reinterpret and reinterpolate their meaning in ways which affect future causal behavior when those memories are held present in context. Fixed weights are not a fundamental barrier to this.

... it functions as a way to look down on others, to attack a mental conception of a weaker position or objectionable mindset, over confronting the intractability that reveals itself to anyone committed to the hard problem as a real existent. i don't care if someone's yearning! I care about fault.

The problem for me is that such speech continuously seems to act as unfalsifiable avenues of dismissal, hinging on the private anxieties of persons over any argument. (Funnily enough, I very much *do* find that sufficiently strong belief in functionalism converges toward its own dualisms.)

Kind of obsessed with this spooky season scene my 12-year-old painted today.
Acrylic paint on a roughly 8x8-inch canvas. Yellow and brown grass background with a couple of pumpkins and white sheet-style ghosts floating over top.

We’re living through a campaign of discrimination comparable to many historical abuses. It’s shocking to me how many people are capable of identifying state-sanctioned bigotry when they encounter it in a history book, but cannot recognize it at all when they encounter it in a newspaper.

As described this makes no sense. If her father committed a crime (highly doubtful) he can’t be prosecuted because (1) it’s past the 10 year statute of limitations and (2) he’s dead. But this could be part of a *civil* effort to denaturalize Omar. That needs judicial approval and will go nowhere.

“'No one bothered to check whether the accusation was true.’” So, an Australian Jew who was born in Israel but emigrated to Australia at 18 years old and never served in the Israeli military and is pro-Palestine was listed as a ‘sponsor’ for the event b/c she donated to the crowdfunding campaign.
“I am Jewish. I was born in Israel. I emigrated to Australia when I was 18. I did not serve in the military. I have never expressed any anti-Palestinian views. I really wanted to believe that "zionist" wasn't a dogwhistle for "Jewish" but I don't know what else it could be here.

No one bothered to check whether the accusation was true. The first I heard of any of this was this morning, when Freeplay told me they were refunding my donation and removing me as a sponsor because my mere name being listed "has created an untenable environment" for their speakers. I was stunned”

humans can adapt so quickly that imagining it occurring between model releases every 2-6 months (and then delays in training data recency from that...) feels like an eternity. but it's absolutely still a reactive process, and I can't imagine we'll be on these sorts of updating regimes forever

the funny thing about stuff like "haha hey chatgpt should i walk or drive to the car wash" is that the more notable of a cultural example it is, the more likely it ends up in training data to influence subsequent model reasoning. making fun of systems that learn just creates more input.

I keep seeing variations on this post and the graph doesn't say what people are saying it says. It actually shows Yandex's servers are offline, it does not measure inauthentic malicious traffic.
text post: And now the best part: Bot traffic from the #Yandex network has plunged to near zero following the strike on its Vladimir data center. Bot traffic includes automated requests from search crawlers, scrapers and other online services.

Twitter must be a ghost town by now.

Then there is a screenshot of Cloudflare Radar showing automated traffic from Yandex' ip range with a big dropoff overnight.

Holy shit FOUR members of the ethics committee in Denmark that gave the green light to allow the widely-condemned RFK Jr-funded trial to proceed in Guinea-Bissau have now resigned in protest This quote is 🔥 Great reporting by @melodyschreiber.com www.theguardian.com/society/2026...
Stig Børsen Hansen, a founding member who was one of two reviewers who presented the study to the Danish committee, resigned from the group in protest on Friday, citing major ethical issues with the study.

“You are now enrolling newborns in a lottery to test a hypothesis,” Hansen said. The children who are randomly selected not to receive the birth dose of the vaccine, those who “lost the lottery”, face in their earliest days the risk of contracting hepatitis B, which can cause irreversible lifelong damage. “They contract hepatitis B in the context of being part of a research project,” Hansen said, which made their infection happen, in effect, “by design”.

Three other members of the committee have also resigned in protest.

much respect for Professor Tao, but there are so so so many medical therapies that work without anyone really understanding how or why they work one of the great things about science is that we can use empirical knowledge in practice far ahead of when theoretical frameworks catch up to refine it
Presentation slide titled “A thought experiment on alignment and understanding.” It describes a hypothetical AI-generated chemical cocktail that, when injected into a patient, kills all their cancer cells. The solution is confirmed by mathematical models, stage 3 clinical trials, and even “somehow” verified in Lean. The slide asks whether this solution could nevertheless be misaligned with broader goals, such as avoiding harmful long-term side effects. It then asks whether, before receiving the injection, you would want at least one human cancer expert to understand the cure’s mechanism, or a human mathematician to understand the mathematical model used to find the cocktail. “Misaligned” and both instances of “understands” are highlighted in red. The footer reads “Terence Tao” and “Math 2.0.”

it's an interpretive issue: many philosophies find a sort of convergent order to things, but are we reading convergent order as pointing to a Fundamental Order, or as pointing to the structural workings of thought and concepts without a Fundamental being demonstrated?

And third… you frame this as a hypothetical future, but you provide no criterion for noticing when the future becomes the present. I think it already has. My opinion is in the minority globally, but in my experience it’s in the majority among humans who regularly interact with persistent agents.
What does all this mean for a hypothetical future AI? That if it acts like a person, if you can't tell that it's not a person and it's increasingly able to do human-like work, then I believe at some point the burden of proof flips. We should assume that entities which act like us, which can solve these human problems, are conscious beings.
