Vintage stationery is always thrilling to me, especially if it’s a little humdrum or repurposed. I remember a piece from a writer who managed to beg a sheet of Sigmund Freud’s notepaper from his desk drawer in the Hampstead museum, and wish I could find it again.

I have a strong memory from around 1998 of curiously going into a small bookshop-gallery-type place (that wasn't exactly a bookshop, nor a gallery) in Jericho (Oxford) that had an absolute shitload of first-edition Blavatsky books laid out on pine tables and the room shimmered but not in a good way

Anyway today was a quiet memorial to the storm by driving up the parkway to where it's cool and breezy and there was a young skinny bear along the way with two still-tiny cubs and the little visitor center with the Stirling engine fans atop the wood stove has a remarkably crappy flag.

The Craggy Gardens visitor center on the Blue Ridge Parkway: a wooden building (toilets out of order because of storm) against a peak. A crappy polyester American flag is flown outside.

Reading in depth for the first time in my life about the late Pleistocene megafauna extinctions and it is actually more mindblowing to me than any Jurassic Park shit, it touches the reality that for most of human existence well into recorded history "large animals fuck you up" was common.

I am someone who has voted for our current president twice because I didn't feel like I had another choice based on the beliefs I have. But I do believe our current president has caused a lot of the extremes and a lot of the rhetoric and a lot of the issues where people cannot compromise and people can't get along. I personally am just praying that we get better candidates in the future.

This is only a gut feeling, but "fraud is legal now" probably contributes to the malaise that will have a reckoning in November: not just those who are being currently defrauded by people acting with impunity but those seeing fraudsters who no longer have to pretend they are legit.
