You’d assume the British press could not simultaneously run with “Gary Lineker is a hate crazed Hitlerian psycho who must be crushed” *and* “We must protect this head-measuring race science Nazi’s unlimited right to be as eugenic as he wants”. But that’s our irreverent, iconoclastic newspapers.

Is it not strange that fascist Russian disinfo designed to inflame, atomise and wreck is the same stuff that’s on the front page of Britain’s top selling newspapers? That seems odd.

I mean, we have had *decades* of experience dealing with truthless, vexatious wingnuts at this point. Has any concession ever made them any happier? Or have they always - every time - taken any fresh ground acquired as a new base camp from which to strike out for more, nastier, crankier goals.

If we were about to get a meaningful leftward shift here, about half the parliamentary party would be attacking it like it was a tanker foolishly wandering into Immortan Joe’s territory, hurling themselves under the tyres like Warboys to ride eternal, shiny and chrome on the Fury Road.

Heard a radio segment driving to work once where they asked people to call in about "how kids use to make their own entertainment". It was supposed to be positive, but then calls came in like "we used to throw wire coat hangers into the power lines to make them spark". They stopped the segment

New: Morgan McSweeney is back advising the Prime Minister - four months after he resigned over his role in the Mandelson scandal.
The former No 10 chief of staff is advising Sir Keir Starmer in his moment of greatest peril, multiple government and Whitehall sources told The i Paper.
McSweeney is helping the Prime Minister and has "never really gone away"
, one minister
said.
"He has been on the end of the phone 24/7," one source said. "He has been wargaming a leadership contest and believes Keir still has a chance if there are three or more [challengers] in the contest. He has been working out how the votes could go. It's mad."

Like, what’s happening now almost feels like what you’d expect if the antiracist movement had threatened the status and clout of people in power, so there was a unified backlash against and crackdown upon them. But if it was that, surely people would now concede that was bad, stupid and malicious.

Do you see how again and again, the weak point in the bulwark against the far right has been: many centrists and libs can’t get enough of being told that young and left wing people are unreasoning extremists who need cracking down on? Just love that stuff, wolfing it down no matter how bad it gets.

At some point people are going to need to come to terms with the fact that the aim of Labour Together was to restore and solidify the party as a fiefdom for pigs, slobs and worms; that it succeeded fully in that goal; and that every person who remains in or affiliated with the party is irredeemable.

You have to say one of the funnier side effects of the panic from the Labour Right and their press allies about the pig people being able to impose a leader on them is that they made it slightly too hard to unseat an obviously unfit leader they want to oust. Chickens coming home to roost yet again.

Our political class gave away or sold their power and capacity to improve lives for the average punter, because they don’t see that as being their job. The market will provide! As far as they’re concerned, their role is to get out of the way and focus on crackdowns and racism.

I agree with @matthewsyed in sense that the circular firing squad of digital age political media is now making the job of PM, whoever has it, almost impossible. Leaders in business do not face the same, it is hell we reserve for our political class. Something fundamental has changed here, which we need to address and discuss.

The “Blue Labour” strategy still being promoted by some on Labour right is premised on being able to win social conservatives while holding on to social liberals. Failure state for this strategy is failing to win social cons while alienating social liberals. Here is a map of that failure state:

It took a two-year screaming all-channels hate campaign and a secret internal wrecking operation funded via illegal donations from a zillionaire, to hammer Sir Keir’s predecessor to a far better position than the one these geniuses achieved just by being themselves and doing what they think is good.

he Labour Party is losing to everyone, everywhere.
There is nothing to redeem Sir Keir Starmer in the results from England overnight, nor any plausible consoling fiction left to cling to. At best, Labour MPs are being taught a hard lesson about the fantastical unpopularity of their leader. At worst, they are witnessing - and frankly are complicit in - Labour's demise as a national party.
It really is that simple. It really is that fundamental.
Starmer is doing worse than Jeremy Corbyn and Nigel Farage is going farther than Boris Johnson ever did in what cliché usually dictates we call Labour's historic heartlands.
This isn't Ukip. It isn't the SDP. This challenge to Labour is qualitatively and quantitatively different to any insurgency that's disrupted the party system before.

Remember: when faced with the prospect of massive losses to the far right and smaller losses to a more left wing but still totally normal party, the Labour right and British press chose all-out war against the left. And they will keep doing this forever.
