Conversely "talent" will get you only so far. One, talent is spread more widely than people who fancy themselves geniuses might presume. Two, no matter how talented you are, you're probably neither a Prince nor a Picasso, and someone else pretty talented who's not a dick can do nearly all you do.

My latest for @sciam.bsky.social is all about the real biology, ecology, and climate science that is used to create the world of Pokémon, and how scientists use it to teach science in the real world. This is just about the most fun I’ve ever had interviewing anyone, and I hope you enjoy! 🧪🌎

I don’t actually think it is the job of #scicomm and it’s certainly not responsible scicomm to uncritically repeat propaganda about a scientific project without situating it in political and social context, actually. We need to build trust with our audiences by being complete! 🧪

A line graph of total NSF funding to date in fiscal year 2026 compared to curves for fiscal year 2021-2015. The fiscal year 2026 curve is much lower with $0.22B funding to date compared with ~$1.5B in fiscal years 2021-2024 and close to $1B in fiscal year 2025.

I'm going to do a thread of all the references and context behind Bad Bunny's performance and what it means for Puerto Ricans to see this on the biggest stage. The opening title screen is a street mural in Puerto Rico that comes to life with footballs as coconuts. Follow along!
A vibrant, wide-angle photo of a colorful outdoor mural promoting the "Super Bowl LX Apple Music Halftime Show." The mural is painted on a long blue wall in a sunlit, tropical setting with real palm trees and bright pink bougainvillea flowers cascading over the top.

The artwork features a playful, surreal collage of cultural and football-themed elements:

Central Text: The Apple Music logo in bold yellow and red 3D lettering is flanked by "SUPER BOWL LX" above and "HALFTIME SHOW" below.

Iconic Imagery: Large illustrations of a golden trumpet, pink sunglasses, maracas, dominoes, and a cup of coffee with a musical note in the foam.

Football Elements: Brown footballs are depicted growing on palm trees like coconuts and resting on the ground.

Foreground: A young girl in a yellow dress walks along the sidewalk in front of the mural, passing a small goalpost illustration where a green parrot is perched.

The overall aesthetic is warm, festive, and celebrates a fusion of Latin-inspired culture and American football.

Bad Bunny’s performance began in the plantation, featured broken electric poles, and ended by centering a hemispheric understanding of “América”—among many other things—and some Anglo journalists are like “his performance wasn’t political.” This is why we need to be telling our stories.
