I feel like my generation experienced Peak Internet and we’re now on a downward trend. Google Search sucks. You can’t trust Amazon ratings. Twitter & Reddit are at war with their users. Every useful news site is paywalled and every garbage one is free. Turns out 2010s were the good old days.

Funny how much of my LinkedIn feed is now shitposts. I assume they are powerless to stop the shitposting now. The product itself has become such a joke. They still have a huge reach because the jobless have nowhere else to go, but LinkedIn feels low value for everyone else.

I only popped in for a minute of the live stream but my favorite part was seeing the massive If statements and hearing @pfrazee.com just own up to them saying "yup that's how we do it for now." Great apps don't always have the cleanest, DRY code. And that's totally okay.

We really labored over this architecture. We wanted to balance user autonomy & control against the requirements of running an at-scale global network The biggest decision we made was opting for a "web-inspired" architecture as opposed to a "mail-inspired" architecture (a la ActivityPub)

I tried out another Twitter competitor today after being on their waitlist for 6 months and I found it amazingly underwhelming. Blue Sky has really raised the bar in terms of features and polish, but also launching with the right strategy at the right time. That matters so much.

It would not surprise me at all if this was intentional, but in the spirit of exposing the messy business of trust and safety: Twitter uses a bunch of vendors for automatic spam/malware URL detection, and they love auto-blocking new, rapidly-propagating domains (like, say, staging[.]bsky[.]app).
