An opposition party doesn’t denounce tyrannical, masked government agents for shooting Americans and disappearing people off the street while voting to give those agents more money.

Extremely optimistic view, narrow imo. Important to recognize that we lost our first encounter with AI in the form of algorithmic dissemination of information. It's ripping apart our ability to recognize truth from falsehood and is segmenting discourse into more isolated spaces. It's gonna get worse

I'm not so comfortable with the ideological fragmentation that happens online. But I also don't think that the Twitter/Bluesky division is a good example considering that Twitter is a Musk run enterprise and can algorithmically neuter the discourse you're ostensibly trying to foster.

I think there's a discussion to be had about the further fragmentation of ideological discourse. But I don't think the Twitter/Bluesky split is not example.

I also really love On Certainty as well, it really is a great example of how deeply embedded this epistemological perspective is!

For me it was the epistemological shifts. It allowed me to stop looking at concepts as discreet entities and more as systems of understanding. And once you start looking at the world this way the traditional problems of philosophy become less intractable.

Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations Changed my outlook on basically the whole world and my self conception. It takes some patience and some extracurricular understanding but it's totally worth imo

Had one of these on the Critique of Pure Reason. Wicked difficult at the time but so glad to have slogged through. I don't think I could credibly claim to understand Kant if I hadn't.

WASHINGTON—Vowing to restore and revitalize the facilities as a symbol of law, order, and justice, President Donald Trump ordered the U.S. government Monday to reopen Joann Fabrics and Crafts stores as federal prisons. “I am directing the Bureau of Prisons to use all 850 Joann locations to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders,” Trump wrote […]

The reason why I cry listening to these old songs isn't because I want to return to the past. It's through music that I get to bear witness to all my past selves. I can see the girl and woman I used to be. She doesn't know I'm there. I know my future self is here, right now, watching these tears.

Really good run down from Naomi Klein about how the modern oligarchic movement is one based on their own perverse logic that is divorced from empathy and ethics.

A lot of people who've analyzed postmodern culture stress how form takes absolute precedent over content. Nowhere is that clearer than using the sound of Rage Against the Machine to rage for the machine

Real answer: probably because people are looking for alternatives to animal products Fake fancy answer: the English speaking world is full of euphemisms that disguise our uncomfortable relationship with animals. "Goat milk" or would not market well. "Cow milk" is a suspicious aura.

I've been consistently disappointed with the quality of NYT AI reporting. It full throatedly buys the hype, even the likes of Ezra Klein will have people on there that make claims like "AGI is only a year or two away" with basically no push back.

I think the important part is that THEY did it. It's a comforting thought that there is a they that's in control rather than the brutal reality that the world is a gigantic vessel with no one at the helm.

I think this admin is still quite sensitive to market fluctuation, especially when it comes to confidence in the dollar. Now you may ask "why then did they send markets into flux via tariffs"? The answer is quite simple, they're a bunch of stupid idiots.

100% I hear this defense of democrats, "they don't have control of congress, they can't do anything". Well they should be hammering the stories of flagrant abuse like this. They need to drill this into the public, if it can happen to him it can happen to you. Hope Mr. Garcia can come home soon.
