Last chance to pre-order Sonido's new book! It's always a fun rush of vicarious emotion when a local friend's book launches. Like Man, I remember you brainstorming that thing.

Fun game: can you tell in this timeline when I finally gave in and took some naproxen?
Google Health sleep score readout, showing the last night's sleep pattern. The timeline shows 9 and 1/2 hours of sleep over 12 hours. The first half shows numerous awake times totaling 2hrs and 39mins and only intermittent light sleep. The second half shows several deep sleep periods and zero awake time.

THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED TO

Dr. John Sharpe of London, who in 1957 a decade before physicians in England could legally perform an abortion for any reason other than the health of the woman, took the considerable risk of referring for an abortion a twenty-two-year-old American on her way to India.

Knowing only that she had broken an engagement at home to seek an unknown fate, he said, “You must promise me two things. First, you will not tell anyone my name. Second, you will do what you want to do with your life.”

Dear Dr. Sharpe, I believe you, who knew the law was unjust, would not mind if I say this so long after your death:

I’ve done the best I could with my life.

This book is for you.

When there are multiple stories about data centers simply building gas turbines without permits, PROVING they can’t be trusted, you’d be a fool to trust them. This is not paranoia, it’s pragmatism.

I questioned the wording and was like, "Whoa maybe that's more than I needed to know about her smoke detectors." Then my eyes focused correctly And honestly, maybe setting them off gets them off. Who knows? I'm not the judge of your smoke detectors. get down with your loud, beepy self. 2/3

I need new glasses. A writing friend just messaged "I should be there by 10 if I can stop trying to set my smoke detectors off" Which I first read "Get my smoke detectors off" and was like, "Well the only ones annoyed by beeping smoke detectors when you're gone will be the cats." But then... 1/3

Maya Angelou on the joys of being edited
I’ve had the same editor since 1967. Many times he has said to me over the years or asked me, Why would you use a semicolon instead of a colon? And many times over the years I have said to him things like: I will never speak to you again. Forever. Goodbye. That is it. Thank you very much. And I leave. Then I read the piece and I think of his suggestions. I send him a telegram that says, OK, so you’re right. So what? Don’t ever mention this to me again. If you do, I will never speak to you again

I would never argue all self-publishing is bad, but I realized years ago that Amazon designed KDP for exactly this purpose: to incentivize people to adopt new tech to churn out more slop titles in a clear attack on the publishing industry with little regard for readers or even the writers themselves

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque: "This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".
Bronze plaque saying "A Letter to the Future. Ok is the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier. In the next 200 years all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path. This monument is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it. August 2019. 415ppm CO2"

Am I off base here? Feels like misdirected anger and Internet mountains out of molehills. This is literally 1 guy in Mumbai with a Patreon, not some enshitifying tech bro forcing features on people for the big cash grab.

Harry @hjmiii.com · 07/12/2025
The message should be more "Don't bother wasting your time coding in features like this that no one wants." Rather than threatening forks and uninstalling a product that doesn't even do the bad thing y'all are claiming.
140
Harry @hjmiii.com · 07/12/2025
I'm not understanding this backlash, personally. The features literally take effort to turn on and force the person doing it to wire up their own LLM. Nearly zero users are going to turn it on, and anyone who does is already bought-in to the slop.
