Asian people and Black people can both face dehumanization in the US, but the type differs: Asian = machine, Black = animal osf.io/preprints/ps... psycnet.apa.org/record/2025-... #prejudice #socpsych #polpsych #psyscisky
Abstract that reads How different racial minorities experience racism differently remains underexplored in existing research. Here, we show that Asian and Black people are often dehumanized differently. Twelve studies spotlight a racial asymmetry in dehumanization using a wide array of methods (experimental, archival, and computational) and data sources (online samples, word embeddings, and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data): Whereas Black people are more often subjected to animalistic dehumanization, Asian people are predominantly subjected to mechanistic dehumanization. We demonstrate this asymmetry from the vantage point of victims (Studies 1a and 1b) and perpetrators (Studies 2a–2d). We further document the prevalence of this asymmetry across diverse domains, from everyday language (Study 3) to perceptions in the realms of romantic relationships (Study 4a), crime rates (Study 4b), and business skills (Study 4c). Finally, we demonstrate the asymmetry’s real-world consequences in labor market segregation (Studies 5 and 6). Our findings shed light on the distinct experiences of racism encountered by different racial groups and, more critically, introduce a framework that unifies and integrates scattered empirical observations on perceptions of Asian people.

Here are some thoughts on the "islamophobic poster" at the recent @spspnews.bsky.social @spspsc.bsky.social conference. I highlight that this poster incident is a marker of systemic racialization of Muslims Please, read and forward to those who are thinking about what can be done. osf.io/s4mvy

This week at SPSP a poster spread flagrantly Islamophobic ideas under the guise of free scientific inquiry. It was offensive, more ideological (hateful) than scientific, and beyond the bounds. To think that just a year ago we were in a full fledged debate about the merit of diversity statements.

I want to note how disappointing it is that SPSP conference continues to fall behind the pace of progress that much of our scholars and research makes in terms of DEI. Lots of fumbling re: islamophobic poster, ombudsman, and prioritizing white comfort overall. It makes for a bittersweet experience.

I am sad, angry, and frustrated by the Islamaphobic poster that made it through the poster review process. A moment of celebration and a sense of belonging was quickly snatched away by this reminder of how academia perpetuates inequities.

Social psych peeps - I made a feed to track all the SPSP posts. Follow it at bsky.app/profile/did:... One warning - it also captures some cat posts with pspspsps or other variations. But, frankly, I think that's exactly what the field deserves for all the ridiculous S and P acronyms.

Social psychology friends: I am updating my list of journals that accept qualitative research in our field - my usual go tos are EJSP, BJSP, Political Psychology, ASAP, Peace and Conflict, JCASP. Am I missing any? Have any journals changed their policies in this regard over the last years? Thanks!

A pediatrician’s two weeks inside a hospital in Gaza www.newyorker.com/news/q-and-a...
And if I could offer an example around how that manifests: a seven-year-old had deep lacerations to his leg and needed some suturing. It wasn’t a life or death case—it was very simple—but the only pain relief we had was Motrin, which was frankly cruel, and a cruel undertaking. There was no ketamine. And so I tried to use one of my pediatric tools as a distraction. And so I had a light flasher, but he wasn’t interested in any of those designs that I put on the wall. So I tried to distract him from the pain. Usually what I would do is ask questions like, “So who’s your best friend?” I can’t ask that because what if his best friend’s dead? “What’s your favorite subject at school?” He hasn’t been to school in three months. “What’s your favorite food?” I don’t know when the last time he ate would be. Every single facet of their society has been ripped apart. ♦
