Unsolicited writing advice, no. 1444: Don't waste time trying to identify trends. Publishers have whole departments to do this, and are still routinely surprised by "surprise bestsellers." Instead, write what you love, and hope other people will love it, too...

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

So while authors and publishers are arguing about divvying up the settlement money, Anthropic have got away with mass theft. Whatever they pay out is simply a cost of business. The shit machine they built with that theft still exists despite a complete lack of consent and blatant law-breaking.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

I've really been struggling to work the last couple of years due to health issues. So I thought instead of trying to write a whole book, this time I'd work on two whole books at once 🙄😆 I really love writing. It's going to take a few years to progress, but it's worth it 🩷 #writing

I am passionate about books because I am writing them and reading them, and I am always learning from them. I think it’s fucking wack that somebody would take an LLM and create a facsimile of something I believe requires passion and effort. Your shitcut not a shortcut; you accomplished nothing.

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows a black cat. The text above the cat reads, "For a long time, black cats were said to be evil and working with the Devil."
The second panel zooms out and shows Sarah, the protagonist, next to the cat. The text above the pair reads "But now we know that's not true."
The third panel shows Sarah hugging the black cat.
The fourth panel shows an orange cat behind Sarah, standing with its arms reaching up as a fire blazes behind it. The text reads, "It's the orange cats."

Last week, a gentleman returned this rather dilapidated copy of this famous book to us after 50 years. He had found it in his attic! Presumably this means there is a pristine copy somewhere in our libraries....
A picture of a rather dilapidated copy of "The picture of Dorian Gray" There is visible water damage to the cover and the plastic cover is yellowing. Obviously, not evident from the picture but there is a truly foul musty smell emanating from it!
