I'm very grateful to Matt & Shaily (@vox-magica.bsky.social) for this account of what happened at VaTech. I've been thinking about a phrase in Henry Giroux's book, Neoliberalism's War on Higher Education. He describes the current state of the university as "the pedagogy of market-based illiteracy."

Perhaps you will find this helpful? A medieval jousting shield depicting an owl, with the inscription: "Though I am hated by all birds, I nevertheless rather enjoy that." Be more like the shield owl: unbothered, deflecting haters with mirth. www.metmuseum.org/art/collecti...
Brown curved jousting shield that shows an owl perched on a branch with green shoots coming out of it. The slogan is inscribed on a white banner that surrounds the owl. Below the branch is a family coat of arms. The invention of blackness in Ovid’s Metamorphoses - postmedieval

In the 1989 political thriller THE PACKAGE, there is a scene where Gene Hackman, Dennis Franz, and Joanna Cassidy meet in a dive bar. They drink cocktails from plastic coconuts with a straw. The whimsy is never acknowledged. Hackman takes a swig! I need the Criterion commentary on this scene.
Three actors at a table in a bar, eating food and drinking cocktails from plastic coconuts.Gene Hackman sipping from his own plastic coconut cocktail. There is a cherry on top.

It was such a pleasure to host @ashleyshoo.bsky.social this week at Bucknell. She engaged with a lit studies course, a computer science course, and gave a fantastic talk about Cyborgs in Corporate Care. The students and faculty of the Health Humanities program were grateful to engage with her!
Poster advertising a lecture at Bucknell University by Prof. Ashley Shew of Virginia Tech. The Poster features an artistic rendering of Prof. Shew, with mobility devices arranged above her head. The text describes the content of the lecture: "Being a cyborg can be dangerous - with parts of your body owned, managed, maintained by companies. To be cyborg is to be tracked and surveilled, and to be misunderstood and misread. This talk centers disabled experiences of technology and care, looking at important real cases of cyborgs made more vulnerable by their participation in the "proper" systems of technology research and design, development, maintenance, health, and infrastructure. Technologies for disability are nearly always cast as life-changing (and sometimes they are), but there's a lot that is obscured by our typical narratives about technology and disability. We need more context of understanding to see the structural factors that guide disabled technology use, and shape our lives. Specific cases include a bionic-eye company gone belly-up, a life-changing brain-implant forcibly removed, state systems for attendant care, and more. We need this context and these cases to reimagine our systems of technology and care, and to arrive at a better understanding of disability and healthcare." The talk took place on Thursday, March 6th 2025.

Last night, I happened to catch a screening of Frank Capra's MEET JOHN DOE (1941) at a local theatre. The movie is about how fascism uses populism to destroy democratic institutions. It's really well done, worth watching, but unsettlingly relevant in 2025.

An anecdote: this year at UMass, the College of Humanities & Fine Arts slashed our funding to attend domestic conferences to $300, & if we apply to the union for funds first. But if we want to collaborate with the College of Computer and Information Science, then we are eligible for a $20k grant.
A paper abstract: Humanities Decline in Darkness: How Humanities Research
Funding Works
Christopher Newfield
English Department, University of California System, CA, USA and Independent Social Research
Foundation, UK
Email: chris.newfield@isrf.org
(Received 30 July 2024; accepted 29 August 2024)
Abstract
Humanities research is underfunded, and the institutional sources and intellectual effects of this underfunding are insufficiently appreciated. The paper gives an example of the negative effects of a humanities discipline's lack of research infrastructure on scholarly work. Section 2 describes the main categories through which research funds arrive on U.S. campuses. Section 3 describes the disproportions between Science & Engineering (S&E or "STEM") funding and funding for social and cultural disciplines. Section 4 discussions the "institutional funds" that universities use to cover research costs from their own pockets. Section 5 shows that universities do not use their institutional funds to compensate for inequities in humanities funding but to perpetuate them. Section 6 claims that the current state of humanities funding abridges academic freedom and calls on humanities administrative personnel to lead a national campaign to rectify the current situation. Misconceptions about humanities research and its funding must be openly acknowledged and addressed so that it can come to have public effects that reflect its actual intellectual achievements.
