Reminds me of a great article by @hipolita.itch.io for Issue 2 of Anime Herald magazine. It's hard to believe now, the hope so many of us had for what streaming could mean for anime and all kinds of artistic expression circa 2010, but I remember. 😭

Very often I'll think I'm too positive on Akiba Maid War and then suddenly remember an all-timer bit in any given episode, make myself cackle laughing and then remind myself: it really was that good.

I always love writing for Anime Herald, and the OVA article was so much to research for. Grab a copy if you want to hear about format wars, the effect of the Japanese economic bubble and burst on the format itself and how the OVA as a oncept became staging grounds for experimental animation.

I have one million thoughts on Zero Parades For Dead Spies Compared to Disco Elysium, it's more grounded while also being more ambitious. It's less funny and fantastical and less suffused with haunting sadness, but in exchange it's sharper and meaner and tighter. Unpolished masterpiece afaic

Kamiina Botan #04 makes excellent use of 間ma, negative space. While the script has uncharacteristically (for anime) frequent and long silence, the storyboard focuses heavily on characters appearing vivisected, bifurcated or narrowly framed in dozens of shots.

The JP title "Kamiina Botan Her Drunken Figure Is Like A Lily Flower" plays on Botan (Peony), lilies (yuri) symbolizing lesbianism and a proverb comparing female beauty to flowers: 立てば芍薬、座れば牡丹、歩く姿は百合の花 (stand tall like a peony, sit elegantly like a tree peony, walk gracefully like a white lily)

Having no chief animation director, Kamiina Botan lets each episode's key animator (this week: obvious SHAFT fanboy Gin-san) express their self-indulgent creativity, their individuality and their unique quirks and idiosyncracies. What a beautiful show.

Oh man this Akane Banashi adaptation is Not Good. I know it's a Shonen Jump manga, I know it's structured like a battle shonen but it really is doing way too much during the rakugo scenes. Huge flashy color backgrounds with movement lines swishing do not convey rakugo at all. Jingling keys shit.

Part of loving and supporting JP-EN localization efforts and the difficult task of conveying information, character and personality to as wide an audience as possible also involves calling out when a loc choice just Sucks Ass.

A still from Jigokuraku. Yuzuriha is closing her eyes and sighing at Sagiri, and the subtitles read "Oh, you sweet, summer child."

Let's start off strong with "Cantrip" by @hipolita.itch.io. Main inspiration is "Little Witch Academia" and others include "The Owl House" & "Kiki’s Delivery Service." The premise is you're a witch at witch school learning how to be a grown-up witch.
