I'd push back against this lightly and say the goal of the manga seems to be typical iyashikei escapism + the author's fetishes and interests, HOWEVER it's apparently found some classroom use as edutainment, but the target audience is definitely young men.

The flythrough shot and the fade to black during that long phone call completely changed my life. I'm a sucker for a fast-talking wisecrack of a protagonist too.

overlooked: Lucrecia Martel's La Ciénaga, a film about a wealthy but decaying rural family in the Argentinian northwest brain-rewiring: The Vast of Night, in which a 1950s NM amateur radio host and his switchboard operator friend unravel a UFO mystery through radio transmissions and phone calls.

I always love writing for Anime Herald, and the OVA article was so much to research for. Grab a copy if you want to hear about format wars, the effect of the Japanese economic bubble and burst on the format itself and how the OVA as a oncept became staging grounds for experimental animation.

It's a good book. Our whole team is super talented, and the articles this time around are killer. My favorites were @hipolita.itch.io's "Loss of the OVA" and @alltsunnodere.bsky.social's "'A pack comes with both danger and safety at the same time': Navigating difference in Journal with Witch"

Huge victory for Woke 2 warriors and Localization Defenders to have the Jaadugar localization do the "Izayaka pub" thing but for Islamic concepts like "iddah mourning period".

The semiology of flags in bio is fascinating to me because some of them even work as force multipliers to others, like building mahjong hands of atrocious takes.

Instead of being about romantics and dreamers trying their best in a fucked world, it's about cynics and bastards doing their worst. Hershel is such a piece of shit, and she's wallowing in the guilt of things nobody blames her for instead of the awful shit she does every single day.

Right? It felt like home despite being *about* the loss of what "home" is for both main characters, while also being constantly unsettling and anxiety-inducing.

I have one million thoughts on Zero Parades For Dead Spies Compared to Disco Elysium, it's more grounded while also being more ambitious. It's less funny and fantastical and less suffused with haunting sadness, but in exchange it's sharper and meaner and tighter. Unpolished masterpiece afaic

2180

I really really enjoyed it. It swung for the fences and maybe didn't get all the way there but it was so ambitious that I can't help but respect it immensely

I was 100% ready for this show to just be a silly yuri comedy type of deal, it did NOT need to be one of the most compelling, heart-tugging animated romances of the last 20 years
