How To Support Libraries and Books Through Voting
The 2026 midterm elections are some of the most consequential in a long time. Here's how to be an informed voter for libraries and books.

Let me adjust the onion on my belt as I say, when I was in Library school I was told to be careful making photocopies because of copyright law and now so many librarians I know are enthusiastically using ChatGPT to do simple things like write emails. I hate it here. I hate it here. I hate it here.

October is domestic violence awareness month. This song is about my mother, and how being married to my brute of a father changed her life irrevocably. She could have been an amazing artist, but she had no regrets because of her kids. This country destroys women. We’ve lost so much to that hate.

Did your library censor Banned Books Week, be it through outright banning, changing of programs, complaints about displays, etc? Tell me about it for a future Book Riot piece. Responses are anonymous. Linked in the survey is last year's piece. tinyurl.com/BannedBooksW...
Graphic featuring library book stacks. On top is text in a yellow box that explains this is a call for survey responses related to banning banned books week. The information in text is replicated in the social media post text itself. The survey link is tinyurl.com/BannedBooksWeek-26.

Carrie White was thick around the middle but not THAT thick around the middle. Besides, Uncle Steve (love him) is hella fatphobic. Carrie’s mom was the actual fat one, remember? If Carrie were fat, no ambiguity re: her evil. Me, I’d rather have fat horror from a fat writer. Anyone got that?

In my Gender and Jim Crow class, we have a whole session on lynching images. I don’t show the victims, I show the crowds. We zero in on the faces in the crowds, their expressions, the children, the mothers, the picnics, the jubilation…all of it.

I know that lots of authors won’t read unsolicited manuscripts for this reason, but I know of many contests where authors judge work so there must be some way of protecting against this.

Question for authors who who judge the work of other writers: how do you handle the potential issue of an author accusing you of plagiarism in the future? I’m running a writing program for youth and want kids to get feedback from authors, but I’m being told this issue is a deal breaker for many.

Press release I woke up to, on Christa Pike’s condition (sent 9/30 at 11:36pm ET)
Statement from Christa Pike’s attorney Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason from the TN Office of the Post Conviction Defender, and Stephen Ferrell and Luke Ihnen from Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee

Tonight the State of Tennessee once again failed to carry out a lawful execution. We take no pleasure in being right, but the concerns raised by Ms. Pike proved to be true: difficult vein access, blown veins, degraded pentobarbital, no emergency medical care available when things inevitably go wrong, all under a protocol that remains veiled in secrecy.

Christa is being treated at a nearby hospital. We have not been informed as to her condition.

Men are afraid of being laughed at. Women are afraid of being killed.
Why do men feel threatened by women?" I asked a male friend of mine. - - So this male friend of mine, who does by the way exist, conveniently entered into the following dialogue. "I mean," I said, "men are bigger, most of the time, they can run faster, strangle better, and they have on the average a lot more money and power." "They are afraid women will laugh at them," he said. "Undercut their world view." Then I asked some women students in a quickie poetry seminar I was giving, "Why do women feel threatened by men?" "They're afraid of being killed," they said.

Margaret Atwood's famous quote ("Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them") in its original form.

I asked a man I love and trust what he’d do if he got a text like the one sent to the Cornell fraternity. He was unable to come up with “What the fuck is wrong with you all I’m calling the police.” It is all men. Men who don’t speak up/push back on other men are complicit and part of the problem.

Schools are experimenting with AI with little evidence or policy to guide them
Teachers are using AI to develop lesson plans, and in some districts, AI chatbots give students feedback on their work. Meanwhile, the research around how AI can help students is extremely limited.
