The USSR basically robbed Russia of more than 7 decades of societal development. It's still the early 20th century there, when imperial powers behaved exactly as Putin does now. It's destined to stay in the same place if it doesn't undergo a reckoning to change that.

Eurostar does this thing of being too cool for school to be a train but it just means you can't get updates from the usual places about how it's running

This is useless. I'm meeting someone at St Pancras. The train was due in at 21:30 but a much earlier arrival is entirely doable. So I've no idea which of these it is...

I think the biggest issue was whether Russia was putting up the money. Whether they had anything to do with the money that went through Northern Ireland for example.

Just as with Swiss arms, European countries aren't going to buy US weapons if they come with the prior restraint that they can't be used against the largest European aggressor

Interestingly Swinney on tv this morning was using the correct term i.e. nations

It's not an opinion. In fairness though, a lot of people make this error. What you're really saying is Scotland *should* be a country, and that I can very much get on board with. Perhaps saying it already is is a way to make that happen.

All true but doesn't alter the facts here even one bit. Westphalian states is a match newer concept but that's what countries are.

A country is a UN member state. This is not a statement of preference but a statement of fact. Nation is the correct term.

Ukraine might be put in a position now where by hitting Russian refineries they come into direct conflict with Trump's interests. I tend to think 'so what?' as America has little leverage over Ukraine now, and that was their own choice.

Hib Bird @hib-bird.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Not sure how much Ukraine will be deterred from striking Russian refineries, because US has very little leverage now that it no longer supplies Ukraine with anything. No assurance that they're even getting that Patriot licence. What will be interesting is whether it in fact incentivises strikes

New primer about the news from the last few hours that the US is getting back to business with Russia. This is not Trump being erratic, it is not about diesel, it is not a small move. It is about the US moving to a more active position of helping Putin. phillipspobrien.substack.com/p/this-is-ab...

Just another day of the government trying to put me out of a job in higher education. First it was keeping out the foreign students I was preparing for UK study programmes. Now it'll be those from disadvantaged backgrounds who we're trying to give a 2nd chance to access a university education.

This is a big caveat to the 'Brits don't speak other languages' generalisation. Getting the chance to actually practice or maintain what you've learned can be hard.

Oleshky is why Ukraine cannot surrender an inch of territory. It’s a European town where civilians are starving to death & being hunted by russian drones. Now imagine condemning millions more Ukrainians to that fate. That’s what would happen.

Was always hoping Lumo or similar might look at a SW-NE service that just skips the stops in the middle. An Exeter/Bristol-Newcastle/Edinburgh service would compete with several domestic flights. It would also allow them to sell competitive long distance fares. www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4wu...

I like the term used by the Sahaidachnyi Security Center in Kyiv (not on Bluesky, I think): 'The Everywhere War': sahasec.org/tracker/. Russian officials keep telling us that Russia is at war with the West; Western officials seem very slow to believe them, in spite of the evidence.

One reason why I am a nut for devolution is this: central government ministers shouldn't spend their working hours thinking about the correct design of bus stops.

Well exactly. If you could upend Israel because of what was done in the 1940s you could also force Poles out of Wroclaw and so on. The problem is what Israel does now, not what it did then.

Very grateful that Powys/the Welsh Government decided a year ago to provide Sunday buses to Montgomery. Makes getting home with the baby so much easier. But it is hilarious that Monty (pop 1,200) has a bus every 2hrs, while just across the border Shrewsbury (pop 76,000) has no Sunday buses at all.

I still want to know: -why a jury needs to be 12 people when it could surely just as well be...5? Or 7? -how can a worker on an hourly paid/zero hours contract legitimately be called up for jury service when it can cripple that person financially?

Byline Times has an unusual distinction: sanctioned by the Kremlin and banned from Reform’s conference. Watch Farage say: “I’ve never met the Russian Ambassador.” He had. There’s a Russian Foreign Ministry photograph of Farage meeting Ambassador Yakovenko in 2013.

Ive never believed the EU has to cave in to UK. More that UK is a different prospect for EU enlargement than say Moldova or Norway - in both good & bad senses. UK's chunk of Defence/security makes a huge difference to EU capability. The EU + UK wants this - both sides can find a way for 1st step.

I think Man City are missing the window to escape with a lighter punishment tbh. If they put their hands up now they could probably get away with a season in the Championship. Because they're digging their heels in, the outcome for them could end up worse.

David Ornstein reports that the legal battle is expanding beyond top-flight teams. Lower-tier clubs are active, appointing lawyers and discussing a potential unprecedented CLASS ACTION lawsuit against Manchester City. If realized, this would be a first in English, European, and world sports history.

The point is that the immigration debate is not about having a reciprocal right. Yes Britain was less protectionist than most of the EU was in 2004, and is never given any credit for it.
