I worked on this book cover! It is a collection of documentary poems about Grace Arents, a philanthropist who lived through the turn of the 20th century. It's out this fall and you can pre-order right now! wordswomenpress.com/product/what...
Book cover depicting an old, sepia-toned photograph of a woman sitting on a rock with woods in the background, reading a book. Her face is only visible in profile. Her brown hair is neatly tied into a bun and she is wearing a long sleeve white shirt and what appears to be a high-waisted pair of long trousers or skirt. Around her, yellow ginko leaves lay, as though resting on top of the photo. A golden thread weaves past the bottom of the image with a needle poking out. The edges of the photo are darkened as though burned. On the left side, set against a lightly texture charcoal colored background, is the title: What Doesn't Burn - Imagining Richmond's Grace Arents in Poems, by Wendy DeGroat.

A flat, conceptual digital illustration of a red sedan car from a top-down view. A radiating radar or sonar shape is arcing out over top of the car, overlaying the colors and creating a sort of strobe effect. The background is a deep, empty navy, evoking nighttime.

Whenever someone prominent accidentally shares an AI hallucination, people are like “this is why you have to double-check the output!” Which is absolutely true, but remember that AI proponents market it as a faster way to work. Which is not really true if you have to double check everything it does.

It seems to me that companies are spending a lot of money on this technology and firing humans not because they think it will be profitable but in an effort to appear AI-optimized to investors. Colleges are doing it because they enjoy thinking of themselves as startups.

To be very clear, that lady in the NYT article is not making any money with her hundreds of AI slop books. She makes money by *convincing people* she makes money that way and getting them to pay her to teach them how to do it. It's an evolved MLM, and the NYT is helping market it.

The Bells in Animal Crossing are probably supposed to be yen, which makes some things make sense (notebook is $1-3 USD, not $100-300), but also makes a lot of other things funnier (villagers “life savings” is 564 bells, which is not half a grand, but instead just enough to buy a big sandwich at 711)

Is somebody developing a service that sends pipe bombs to the real-time physical location of people who pass your images through AI? I’d pay $1000/mo for it. $1000/mo could be the base tier with 5 minute-long unskippable ads and I’d still pay it.

I got tapped to illustrate this annual story for Richmond Magazine for the third year running - patting myself on the back! Very fun to look back on the year's ups and downs, and find interesting ways to collage them all together. You can read the article here: richmondmagazine.com/news/best-wo...
A photo of a magazine spread with an illustration. The article is called "The Year's Highs and Lows" and can be read in the provided link. The illustration is a drawing of a collection of stamps, sticky notes, and movie-theater style tickets, each corresponding with a short story from the article. For example, Francine the Lowe's cat has a stamp, Governor Spanberger has a stamp, and there are "past-due" sticky notes peppered throughout the collection to match the story about Richmond, VA being behind on collecting some taxes.
