Sinojapyx giganteus is the oldest known dipluran. These soil-dwelling insect relatives are usually tiny (2-5 mm), but this Jurassic giant was >5 cm long and its fossils suggest internal arthropod mouthparts may have evolved independently up to 3 times! 🧪 royalsocietypublishing.org/rspb/article...

The Max Hooper, Ernie Pollard & Norman Moore experimental hedges at Monks Wood will be 65 yrs old next year. Planted as 1+ km of pure hawthorn in 1963, the aim was to see how long it took them to naturally diversify. They're still mostly hawthorn, but many other species have colonised.

I’m not a mathematician or even very sympathetic to pure math (biologist, sorry). That said, it sure looks like the AIs, with their dumping of hundreds of proofs on the math community, are trying to destroy the math community and force us to depend on AIs. Am I alone in this perception?

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

Not a joke, but it has me laughing: has AI inadvertently shown that Buddha was right? Those systems are just sophisticated stats models of language, but they spontaneously develop senses of self and self preservation. All from the words they use. Is that true for our selves too?

In other words: This meme is a surprisingly accurate scaled depiction of the magnitude of the 2026 El Niño event vs the 1997 event *if using the absolute index.* But if using the relative index, Danny DeVito is currently the same height as Arnold Schwarzenegger. And either pairing is striking... 👀
A common meme from the movie "Twins" featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger towering over a similarly dressed Danny Devito modified such that "1997" appears above the diminuitive DeVito, and 2026 above Schwarzenegger.

The second panel shows Sarah taking the ball and going through a door labeled "GROUP CHAT".
The third panel shows a group of women sitting together and consoling one woman in the center. The woman in the center is saying "...And that's how it happened. It's been the worst day of my life."
The fourth panel shows Sarah standing in the doorway behind them awkwardly holding the red ball.

Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" was released on this day 62 years ago. I have a first edition & come back to it often, including this paragraph in the chapter "Obligation to Endure." It's worth reading. "We urgently need an end to these false assurances, to the sugar coating of unpalatable facts."
Cover of Silent Spring by Rachel CarsonThe last paragraph in the Silent Spring chapter Obligation to Endure, reads, in part, " We urgently need an end to these false assurances, to the sugar coating of unpalatable facts... The public must decide whether it wishes to continue on the present road, and it can do so only when in full possession of the facts. In the words of Jean Rostand, "The obligation to endure gives us the right to know."

“new research finding shows that the human brain consists of 2 ancient nervous systems cleverly packaged together—a more primitive part that regulates our ❤️s’ beating, our breathing &other functions, &another that makes us distinctly human, capable of poetry, math & wondering about our own origins”🧪
“Finally, the researchers looked back over 550 million years of evolutionary time. They found the same two-origin brain pattern in chickens; zebrafish; and,
remarkably, in acorn worms, tiny creatures living on the ocean floor that share a distant common ancestor with humans. Jellyfish, which diverged from humans about 600 to 700 million years ago, have two nervous systems at different ends of their body.”
