Despite these challenges, some island lineages persist for millennia—the paradox of persistence. Here, we synthesize genomic studies across island systems and show that reported effective population sizes are frequently below 100, but assessments of genetic load and its temporal dynamics remain uncommon. We show that island systems can offer critical insights into how small populations maintain viability and adaptive potential. Future research on genomic erosion needs to broaden taxonomic and geographic coverage, leverage temporal genomic data, and integrate demographic and fitness-based approaches to link evolutionary resilience on islands with the conservation of increasingly fragmented populations worldwide. 062

Hernán E. Morales @hernmoral.bsky.social · 01/07/2026We built realistic forward simulations, validated against temporal genomic data. They show conservation was essential to avoid extinction, and that continued management may remain needed because population numbers can recover while drift debt unfolds. 130
Hernán E. Morales @hernmoral.bsky.social · 01/07/2026Long-term small Ne is expected to expose deleterious alleles and reduce severe inbreeding depression. Yet genome-wide erosion still predicted lifetime reproductive success, pointing to ongoing fitness costs after rescue. 110
Hernán E. Morales @hernmoral.bsky.social · 01/07/2026Compared with other kestrels, the Mauritius kestrel carries the signature of a long-term small island population: exceptionally low diversity. But it also stands out for extreme inbreeding, reflecting the recent crash rather than island history alone. 120
Hernán E. Morales @hernmoral.bsky.social · 01/07/2026The species crashed to only 4 known wild birds in 1974. Across historical and modern genomes, recovery from this bottleneck left clear genomic impact: lost diversity, rising homozygosity and continuing genomic erosion after demographic recovery. 120
