I think intent matters, and if your intent is to depict something with the gravity it deserves, and you heavily take into account advice from people who have experienced what you're writing about, (if it isn't something you yourself have experienced) then that's what matters.

I guess I'd also add that if I, as a Native American, saw a period film depicting the evils with which America dealt with Natives, and yet it cut out the language necessary to depict said vileness fully, it'd feel bizarre, and off-putting. Like the film wanted to water down things or something.
