🔆 Good morning! Voyager 1 is whispering back with a radio transmitter about as powerful as a refrigerator light bulb, from roughly 16 billion miles away. Its signal takes almost a full day to reach us and, nearly 49 years after launch, it still arrives... For now.🧪 scienceblog.com/t-voyager1-2...

h = 14 m (45 ft)
Impact velocity = V = V 2gh = 16.6 m/s; kinetic energy before impact = 6,860 J
Average impact force = 68,600 N

Important moments in human evolution: Around two million years ago, a hominid of the species Paranthropus boisei (not our direct ancestor) ate an ancestor of modern chimpanzees. Sometime after that, a Homo erectus (our direct ancestor) ate a P. boisei. And that's why people have genital herpes.

I have started an interesting project this last month I’ve been reading 1914 newspapers every day since July 28 because the years 2026-2030 coincide day by day to the war years 1914-1918. On the eve of the Austrian ultimatum so far I’ve learnt that there’s nothing new under the sun.

Here's a lovely photo of a plethora of hand-sewn fabric art creatures. There's a watermelon creature with a red face, eight black seed-like eyes, and a wide mouth with five sharp teeth. There's a white ghost trinket bag covered with purple embroidered flowers. She has a gray face, sparkly black eyes and a little frown. There's a strawberry creature with three bulbous green eyes. There's a watermelon ghost, and a black creature with sharp teeth wearing a bulbous eye earring. There's a large purple creature with many yellow eyes and an open mouth, with a little green creature popping her head out. All the creatures are sitting on green fur and there's a galaxy print fabric in the background.

1. London Underground station flooding has reportedly been reduced by around 90% thanks to a group of engineers: beavers. After conservationists reintroduced a family of beavers into a nearby city park, the animals built dams and restored wetlands that now absorb and slow floodwater naturally.

I'm struck how this account of climbing Mt Everest in 1952 echoes what astronauts say they miss on long-duration ISS missions: "a desire...to see grass and water and leaves once more"
Text from an account by Swiss mountaineer René Dittert: "did we think? Scarcely, for altitude seals the brain. One's imagination is even less active, fortunately. Rather, one is invaded by waves of vague feeling: a desire to leave everything to descend once and for all, to see grass and water and leaves once more; anxiety at the idea that if the snow was beginning to fall, the avalanches would not miss us; terror at the sudden thought that we might have been at the south call or even higher. And then at moments, seen clearly through this maze of anxieties, the hope that the nightmare was about to end, that the sunlight would return, that all our chances were not extinguished. The will to go on was still alive, deep down, fragile, threatened, but living like flames that one has to shield with both hands lest they die."

detailed digital drawing of a fake video game screen in neon colors. it's like a classic RPG dungeon crawler with exaggerated over-the-top UI design. the only legible text is "Quest 32" on a gold scroll adorning the title bar, everything else is gibberish. the largest window features a 1st person view of two red hands weilding weapons against a dragon in flight. surrounding it are a bunch of smaller windows featuring characters, inventory items, a mini map, menus, buttons, etc.

Delightful ‘Dancing Dogs’ figurine. Blackware ceramic, 200 BC - 200 AD. Comala, Late Formative Period. Colima, West Mexico. 📷 Princeton University Art Museum artmuseum.princeton.edu/art/collecti... #Archaeology
This Princeton University Art Museum photo shows a blackware ceramic figurine of two stylised dogs which look as if they are dancing. They are standing upright on their hind legs, facing each other, their front legs raised, with paws resting against each other. The dog on the left has its face turned towards the viewer, with snout slightly raised and seeming to smile. The dog on the right, rests its raised snout against the cheek of its partner. The figures are rounded and smooth with short legs, pointed snouts, pointed ears, and short curved tails. Their bodies are decorated with incised lines, which according to the museum, represent folds of skin, indicating that these canines are Mexican hairless dogs.

Museum info:
“Comala, Late Formative Period, 200 BC –200 AD, Colima, West Mexico, Mexico, Mesoamerica, Dancing dogs. Blackware ceramic; 12.6 x 13.5 x 7.5 cm. Museum purchase (Object Number y1985-49)”
