Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Hard agree. Restaurants and pubs need to employ lighting designers and watch their profits soar 000
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Totally. There are perhaps heightened safety issues for women but ultimately and dark unsurveilled paths are off putting and not safe for anyone. NEPN perhaps an exception as it’s so heavily used. Perhaps the group most at risk is actually teenage boys 120
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 07/10/2026I am a woman or girl who uses the off road networks at night but not without considerable trepidation. After the spate of attacks on the NEPN which were against people of all genders and ages, we should want safety for everyone 120

And if they are, then why do they have a blanket exemption on rules that others have to follow? In July I introduced a Bill to end outrageous Royal exemptions in the Freedom of Information Act. You can read it here: bills.parliament.uk/bills/4267 814847
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 22/09/2026It’s kind of irrelevant when my kids will graduate in Scotland with £34k of debt and all their friends going to England will be £47k in debt. Not that different. They will all be paying the same 9% tax from their salary for the rest of their lives and the total amount owed doesn’t matter 120
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Yes they are all underfunded but universities in Scotland get paid £2000 less per student so you can see why things are particularly acute here 110
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Minimal difference to the total if you look at cost to the student over 3 versus 4 years. And because so many don’t pay off the ‘debt’ it just sits there acting as a graduate tax on earnings for the rest of their life whether the original amount was the Scottish 35k or the English 50k 000
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 22/09/2026True. But tuition fees being paid by the government makes that even worse here (universities get much less per student in Scotland), and is little benefit to students as well 🤷♀️ 200
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 22/09/2026It’s not free though. Every Scottish student I know gets a maintenance loan for 4 years, ending up at least £34k in debt. Those going to England to study don’t have much more debt despite tuition fees because of shorter 3 year degrees. And scotish universities are on their knees because of it 200
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Also, what about sick people who don’t have a car and have to take a taxi? Should we pay for them too? 1220
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Another SNP shibboleth that was done for the headlines despite the results. Like tuition fees 210

Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 17/09/2026Why on earth aren’t there bollards preventing lorries mounting the pavement? Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Has anyone at the council given a thought to those who live there and the fact that it’s a busy walking and cycling route to 4 schools? Or are they just afraid of slowing down Mr West Lothian commuter on his way to a free workplace parking space? 030
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 16/09/2026That road at rush hour is *horrendous* and there are wall to wall parked cars both sides. The residents must be so disappointed at this missed opportunity 160

Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Newhaven and Granton are right next to each other. The tram journey would be 3-4 minutes 000
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Compared to buses only, it’s looking enticing. It would be well used. They could extend it to Silverknowes! 000
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 16/09/2026If it’s that or nothing (as it is currently) and the newhaven to Granton extension should be done anyway, I dont see why they don’t crack on with that option 110
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 16/09/2026😮 We’ve got an easy bolt on from newhaven to Granton and we’re not choosing that? If it’s currently good enough for the people of newhaven then I’m sure an extra 2 mins on the journey would be fine for those of Granton 220
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 16/09/2026But it would only be one or two stops from newhaven and Newhaven seems to work for journey time and revenue? Surely that’s a much quicker and cheaper option that would be widely supported 100
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 16/09/2026@nigelbagshaw.bsky.social you may know. Is there a reason the newhaven leg can’t be extended to Granton? 110
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 16/09/2026It does highlight the massive loss of the path for so many people who’d have to take a worse, inconvenient detour as that’s all we’d be left with 010
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 16/09/2026It never gets mentioned how hilly the on road alternative is. It is not a straight replacement that would be used by the same people 121

Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 15/09/2026It seems that across the city people are crying out for basic and cheap safety infrastructure. What’s your opinion @gavincorbett.bsky.social on why the council are seemingly utterly incapable of providing the simplest thing? 100
Helen Back @helenback1.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Patrick Harvey said the Scottish gov made up ludicrously convoluted processes that have to be followed by councils. If this is the case, why aren’t they undoing their own rules to speed things up? London just cracks on but we are mired in easily derailed process for years 131
