Volg me hier: @heddwen.bsky.social Eén plek is tenslotte handiger.

Extract NOS artikel over Eurovisie Songfestival 13-05-2025:

English 'wood', Dutch 'woud', and German 'Wald' can all mean "forest". However, despite their similar forms, 'wood' is not in any way etymologically related to 'woud' or 'Wald'. 'Woud' and 'Wald', which do have a common ancestor, are related to English 'wold' instead. Click my graphic for more:

Putting Dunglish expressions on faux Dutch tiles has been done to death. My idea: motivational posters. What do you think?
Motivational poster:
a sunny beach photographed from above with two people walking far down below
Text:
"If you have butter on your head, you shouldn't walk in the sun"
In the place where the originator of the quote would normally be, it says "English and the Dutch"

A Dutch word for something (or more commonly someone) that you can’t think of the name of is huppeldepup! There is no word that I enjoy saying aloud more. HUPPELDEPUP! There’s also a pub in The Hague that puns on the word huppeldepup…

Another one of those memes where English-speakers notice that Dutch looks a bit like English sometimes.

I just enjoyed your first column in DUTCH the magazine. A 'linguist who specializes in the way Dutch speakers use English" ???? ... here you are when I need you!

My partner grew up in Amsterdam in the 40's and 50's, favors a precise Dutch usage, is fluent in Italian, Spanish, and English (lived in US since mid-80's), and is better than me with cross-word puzzles & Wordle (I'm moderately good).

In the 7 years we have been together, she frequently uses an English phrasing that puzzles me greatly. When she responds to a question and wants to convey an emphatic 'No' , she says "I think so from not" ! Do you know how that English phrasing might have originated?

Looking forward to seeing you in DUTCH this year.

The English words 'no' and 'no' don't have the same origin. 'No', the opposite of 'yes', comes from West-Germanic *naiw ("never"). 'No' as in 'no pain, no gain' arose as a variant of 'none' and stems from *nain ("not any"). They only share the n-, from *ne ("not"). Click to learn more: 1/

#LangSky #taal
