David Hockney : Steps with Shadow F (Paper Pool 2), 1978 Unique hand-coloured pressed paper pulp, on white TGL handmade paper 50.75 x 33.5 in | 128.8 x 85.1 cm Further description & info in the alt text 👇
In the late 1970s, David Hockney began experimenting with the unconventional paper pulp medium in an attempt to capture the subtle hues of shimmering light on water.

David Hockney (b. 1937, Bradford, England) is a British painter and printmaker best known for his California Pool paintings, including A Bigger Splash (1967, acrylic on canvas, 96 × 96 in.), sun-saturated acrylic works that captured West Coast life and made him one of the defining figures of the 1960s Pop Art movement.

Over a career spanning more than 6 decades, Hockney has worked across acrylic painting, printmaking, photo collage, opera set design, and iPad drawing.

Hockney first gained critical acclaim in 1961 with semi-autobiographical paintings depicting gay relationships, shown at the Whitechapel Gallery, London. He relocated to Los Angeles, CA, in 1964, a move that proved decisive:
the light, architecture, and uninhibited queer social life of Southern California became his defining subject.

Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), 1972, (sold for $90.3 million at Christie's) acrylic on canvas, 84 × 120 in.), a double portrait set against a turquoise pool, became his most celebrated single work.

You are invulnerable. - Jorge Luis Borges, "To Whoever Is Reading Me"
To Whoever Is Reading Me
You are invulnerable. Have they not granted you, those powers that preordain your destiny, the certainty of dust? Is not your time as irreversible as that same river where Heraclitus, mirrored, saw the symbol of fleeting life? A marble slab awaits you which you will not read — on it, already written, the date, the city, and the epitaph.
Other men too are only dreams of time, not indestructible bronze or burnished gold; the universe is, like you, a Proteus.
Dark, you will enter the darkness that awaits you, doomed to the limits of your travelled time.
Know that in some sense you are already dead.
Jorge Luis Borges, translated by Alastair Reid

Worst thing to happen to book crit was getting mercilessly synced to pub dates. writer gets 97% of the coverage they're ever getting by the end of week 2, & if the book is widely reviewed (positive or not) in prestige places some of your would-be audience burns out on takes & skips the book itself.

This is a map of Los Angeles. The arrow points to a red dot. That red dot (roughly) represents the protest area seen on TV. To me, the gross mischaracterization of what’s happening in Los Angeles looks like an excuse to deploy the military—to protect government assets like ICE.
A map of Los Angeles is posted to illustrate just how large the city is. Near the area labeled “downtown” on the map, is a tiny red dot. That represents the area where protests are happening and that are being shown on TV. The dot is so small it would not be seen if I had not drawn an arrow towards it.
