And while I hated this pedagogical model as a student I am shocked [unspecified number of years later] to have discovered that this in fact is *specifically* how I have learned every language I have reading knowledge of. dead languages pedagogy, you were onto something!!!

After [unspecified number of years] since 6th grade, the last time I took any kind of Latin class, I have decided that THIS WILL BE MY YEAR to finally learn it I found the book we used in 6th grade on thriftbooks, the one where they get stuck in the ditch forever (which has delighted me to no end)

You are describing a 'quality check' that is very close to qualitative research, which often uses ANOVA as the metric. highly recommend having a look around to see how multiple eyes/hands are dealt with in this space (you could reasonably treat AI as a duplicity of perspectives)

I'm still bad at actually producing any of my languages but once I realized I was allowed to just be OK at reading them things got a /lot/ better. Can I produce a single sentence in spanish? Absolutely not (this is a problem where I live). Can I read, translate, and then operationalize it? Yup!

but I was thinking, also, about how I was so bad at math and science for years. I was busy failing math from 6th grad onwards, and I *only* started thriving in thinking about it when grades were decidedly off the table. Our STEM friends surely also thrive in history, etc this way too.
