Zooniverse is creating a new way for research teams to experiment with tools and approaches that aren’t currently possible within the standard Zooniverse Project Builder. These Custom Front Ends remain connected to Zooniverse infrastructure while giving researchers more flexibility to test new ways for volunteers to take part in research. Building projects on Zooniverse Since Galaxy Zoo launched in 2007, the founding of Zooniverse in 2009, and the launch of the Zooniverse DIY Project Builder platform (

LOVE LETTERS TO ZOONIVERSE: From Bulgaria to the Stars
In our “Love Letters to Zooniverse” series we share wonderful stories from volunteers who have made Zooniverse a meaningful part of their lives, often contributing to projects and communities over many years. Here is one more, from Svetoslav Alexandrov, a 39-year-old molecular biologist and astrobiology researcher from Bulgaria. Since becoming an active Zooniverse volunteer in 2022, Svetoslav has contributed to discoveries across several astronomy projects, become a project moderator and scientific co-author, and even had an asteroid named after him.

A New AI Ethics Framework for Zooniverse
This post was written by Hillary Burgess and Sam Blickhan. In June 2025, we announced an initiative to develop a set of recommendations for running AI/ML-engaged projects on the Zooniverse platform. After a year of collaboration and discussion with volunteers, experts in ethics, communications, AI, and participatory research, as well as Zooniverse project leads (noting that these groups are not mutually exclusive!), we are excited to finally share the results of this work.

Roman is on its way. Zooniverse is getting ready
NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has successfully launched, beginning its journey toward a new era of wide-field space astronomy. Roman is NASA’s next flagship observatory, designed to survey vast areas of the universe in near-infrared light. Its observations will help scientists tackle some of the biggest questions in astrophysics: What is dark energy? How is dark matter distributed across the universe?

LOVE LETTERS TO ZOONIVERSE: Looking for Galaxies
As we celebrate 1 billion classifications on Zooniverse, we continue the "love letters" series - messages to our team from Zooniverse volunteers. The letters come from different continents, age groups and lifestyles, but they all invite us to stay curious as we do science together. Today's letter is from Daria, who participated in 67 projects, contributed almost 60,000 classifications and discovered 6 galaxies at age 16.

✨ 🔭 Announcing Clear Skies - Kiruna! @solarstormwatch.bsky.social need clear skies in order to peer into space. Would you help by viewing pictures of the sky above Kiruna and telling when there are no clouds? Bonus: You will almost certainly get to see an aurora. www.zooniverse.org/projects/lep...
Announcing new Zooniverse project: Clear Skies - Kiruna. The DRIIVE project (Drivers and Impacts of Ionospheric Variability with EISCAT-3D) is a consortium including scientists from University College London, University of Reading and the British Antarctic Survey. We study how the sun affects the Earth's space environment using powerful RADAR and sensitive cameras situated in the Arctic. The skies need to be clear for our sensitive detectors to measure winds on the edge of space. These winds can slow down satellites in their orbits through frictional drag.

We need your help to tell us when the skies are clear and our measurements of these 'space winds' are most reliable. The image shows the whole night-sky above Kiruna, Sweden. The skies are clear with several well-known constellations of stars visible. To the top of the image (the Northern horizon) a thin band of green aurora stretches across the sky. Conditions are great for measuring winds on the edge of space!

A circular logo for "Marine Lens Florida Keys" featuring a colorful, stylized illustration of ocean life. The design includes a Mutton Snapper, a Green Moray eel, a spiny lobster, a Queen Conch shell, and an Elkhorn coral, all arranged in a dynamic swirl. Many important fish species gather in large groups to reproduce at predictable locations and times. This predictability makes them extra vulnerable to fishing pressure.

Acting like underwater oases, solution holes provide shelter and food for many marine animals, in an otherwise flat, open seascape.

These cameras enable observation of marine species without disturbing them. Especially, rare behaviors, nocturnal or shy animals that divers might miss.

Help researchers analyze footage collected by underwater cameras. By identifying species and behaviors, you’ll be contributing to meaningful science! The ocean’s full of secrets – just when you think you’ve seen it all…boom, something new!
