What Timothy Snyder says here cannot be over-emphasized. Democrats must not only win, but immediately – announcing on 4 Nov. and beginning on 3 Jan., they *must* legislate and execute anti-corruption – even if Trump vetos them. We must become the party of anti-corruption and social mobility.

What’s your legacy Johnson? Brexit. Total collapse of trust in politics. And this. The small boats symbolise your dishonesty and your failure. You’re responsible for nothing but damage. Not one good thing. Not one proud moment. You’re forever a shameful disgrace who threw his own mandate in the bin.

It's a disaster, and it can all be traced to Labour ideology. Burnham has no mandate from the people. He has no real ideas, and no plan.

To someone in the UK currently paying twice as much for petrol as I did pre trump, it's disappointing to see even the champions of democratic propriety post this clip of chummy "pushback" as if it's restorative. I'm not getting any hopes up, because, well, polling.... But I will take a small dopamine hit thinking about what this headline does to the people that thought their stranglehold was ironclad. Ironclad enough that they believed they could, and should, put up a candidate with that level of depravity.

Actually, sorry, having a look at this again, this is astonishingly poor. What possessed you to post this? Quite apart from the historical illiteracy, the implicit insult to a nation that would be in any intelligent person's top 5 of least problematic nations. Fuck AI. Solve the double slit problem.

Fair point. I think, at present, the most tangible danger of AI is the hiatus it creates in investment due to the unknowability of it's impact. I'm a cabinet maker, it's not coming after my job soon. Why not expand? Because my clients work in insurance, investment, risk management. Nobody's hiring.

I agree with all of this but I think there might be an assumption that the background realities are stable. They're not. AI is the least predictable tech shift in human history and recursive self improvement is months away, global warming is no longer a future issue and is in positive feedback mode,

A big part of the problem is that even if we got “the right leadership” the American electorate has demonstrated it will readily install a maniac ganster to replace them if the economy ever stumbles. You can’t really plan long-term alliances with that sort of partner.

The alarms are all flashing red.
Screenshot of a thread on X by user Jacob Coxon (@hilbertspaess) detailing his resignation from Anthropic.
The first post reads: "I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below."
The second post reads: "Do not underestimate the power of this technology. These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources. We have all witnessed the progress in each of these domains, and progress is not slowing."
The third post reads: "The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger."Screenshot continuing the thread on X by Jacob Coxon (@hilbertspaess).
The first post reads: "A common response is 'if they truly believe this, why are they still building it?' At OpenAI, many have not deeply internalized the civilizational stakes. At Anthropic, the stakes are well-understood, but they are locked in a race to get there first - they believe no one else will act responsibly, so they must do it themselves, despite the risk."
The second post reads: "Accepting this race and entering the 'endgame' is a hubristic gamble that should not be launched from a private company's Slack. Attempting to speedrun alignment should require extraordinary confidence that there are no better trajectories available."
The third post reads: "I am optimistic about the potential for coordination. Warning shots like the Hugging Face attack have made pacing agreements between U.S. labs more viable. I don’t feel like we’re on track to prevent a global race, which may require costly actions such as a temporary ban on improving model capabilities."
The fourth post reads: "If you are a lab researcher, I urge you to consider what the next few years will actually feel like. Do you want to kick off a superintelligent RL run without a rigorous understanding of its mind? Should you put your head down because 'it’s happening anyway' - or take this moment to call for different conditions?"
