Mind currently whirring at the fact that, of all the legal traditions in medieval Afro-Eurasia, only East Roman (Byzantine) law recognised interest without condemnation or mystification. The longest chapter - by some distance - in the 11th c. casebook known as the Peira is on debt & interest.

Very sad. I spent the end of last year reading Moore's lesser read pieces of comparative, and integrated, global medieval history. A true pioneer that linked the current Global Middle Ages & late-20th c. world history, and to my mind unsurpassed by any current paradigm for global history c.500-1500.
