you only get one 5 years anniversary, so I wrote a poem to commemorate the occasion (and to do a little reflecting).

The 5 Year Plan

5 years.
A lot can happen in 5 years.
Instead of making the same decisions & doing the same thing you did for the last 5 years, You can take an entirely new path.
You can make different choices.
You can breathe new life into yourself.
Trust me.
I speak from experience.

It all started on one day.
August 31, 2021.
Turns out one day can change your life.
A stack of new meds.
Estradiol & spironolactone.
A trial of sorts to see if this is truly what I wanted.
And before I knew it,
One Day became Day One.

And every day since, I've stuck to the regimen.
In the proceeding time, Ups & downs occurred.
Changes to my body.
Changes in my environment.
Changes in the company I keep.
A lot of these changes were tough, But necessary.
Some of those choices bore fruit immediately.
And others took years before I saw the results.

I celebrate this anniversary of that One Day every year.
And every year there's always a bit of melancholy that comes along with it.
Most of it dysphoria or otherwise body image-related.
Wishing that I was farther along in my journey or that I looked different in some way.

That might still happen this year.
5 years in & I still have my inner demons.
The self doubt will sometimes still burst into my brain like Kramer from Seinfeld.
But this year, something is a little different.

When I look at the mirror, I finally see her.
She's been there, of course. staring at me this entire time.
I just couldn't see her.
All I could see was the flaws.
But after 5 years, I see her.
She is there.
And she is happy.
And to be quite honest, She doesn't look too shabby!

and with that said, onto the next.
Jobs not done, after all.
The only thing better than 5 years
Is 10 years.

I’m still heartbroken over Dolly. she was only 3 years older than my Mom. and my Mom loved her. she had that same southern girl accent & the same poofy/permed hairdo’s as Dolly (with red hair instead of blonde). this felt like losing one of the last remaining connections with my Mom. 😭💔
